About the Author
Paul Washer became a believer while attending the University of Texas studying to become an oil and gas lawyer. He completed his undergraduate studies and enrolled at Southwestern Theological Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity degree. He left the states shortly after graduation as a North American missionary to Peru.

Paul ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian Church planters. The work of HeartCry now supports over 80 indigenous missionaries in 15 different countries throughout Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

An itinerant preacher, Paul also frequently teaches at his home church, Grace Life Church of the Shoals. At present, Paul serves as the Director of HeartCry Missionary Society and resides in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with his wife Charo and two sons Ian and Evan, and one daughter Rowan.

Insulting Those You do not Know

I know Paul Washer. I have sat under his teaching. I have conversed with him, both regarding his teaching, and regarding the faith. He speaks hard things, but he speaks honest things. If you are looking to get your ears tickled, don't buy this book, because instead of getting them tickled you'll be getting them boxed. Paul teaches hard things, but he teaches honest things, he teaches solid things, and he teaches the true things. So, if you want to know God as He really is instead of like the ear-ticklers would prefer He was, park yourself between the pages of this book and don't come up except to eat, drink, and breathe the Bible, which is the Word of God.

A Solid, Biblical Study

It is a question I am asked a lot: what Bible study curriculum do you recommend? I rarely know what to say. There are so many of them available; time would fail me to collect, examine and review them all. I was interested, then, to see that Paul Washer is releasing a new edition of The One True God, a title first released several years ago. It is published by Granted Ministries Press. No less than Iain Murray declares that it is "the best introductory work known to me. ... Young Christians could scarcely spend their time better than working carefully through these pages."

This is a 192 page hardcover book meant for serious study. "The great goal of this study is for the student to have an encounter with God through His Word. Founded upon the conviction that the Scriptures are the inspired and infallible Word of God, this study has been designed in such a way that it is literally impossible for the student to advance without an open Bible before him or her." And he is right. A person who seeks to skim through this study or who leaves it for the last minute will not only gain very little but will actually be unable to complete it.

Washer begins his book this necessary, valuable exhortation. "The study of doctrine is both an intellectual and devotional discipline. It is a passionate search for God that should always lead the student to greater personal transformation, obedience, and heartfelt worship. Therefore, the student should be on guard against the great error of seeking only impersonal knowledge, and not the person of God. Neither mindless devotion nor mere intellectual pursuits are profitable, for in either case, God is lost." The purpose of this study, then, is not merely to increase knowledge, but to increase devotion. At the same time, we must not downplay knowledge for "The mind is not the enemy of the heart, and doctrine is not an obstacle to devotion. The two are indispensable and should be inseparable." We must love God with heart, soul and mind; we must love God in both spirit and truth.

Each of the book's fourteen lessons looks to a specific attribute of God. Studies include "God is One," "God is Spirit," "God is Righteous," "God is Creator and Sustainer" and "The Names of God." The student will complete lessons only by looking to Scripture, studying it and understanding it. It is self-directed in that the benefit gained will be directly proportional to the work given to it. Says Washer, "The student will find that this is primarily a Biblical study and does not contain much in the way of colorful illustrations, quaint stories, or even theological commentaries. It was our desire to provide a work that only pointed the way to the Scriptures and allowed the Scriptures to speak for themselves." And this is exactly what he accomplishes.

The lessons are completed right within the book, ensuring that this is a book you will personalize and make your own. There are fill-in-the-blank questions, questions that will require turning to Scripture and completing a sentence or two of summary, and questions that will require thought and application. All of this is interspersed with solid, biblical teaching about the person and character of God. You can view an older edition of the book here if you would like to get a taste of the format (though you should note that the new edition looks quite a bit nicer, even if the content is the same).

Suitable for individual use, small groups or Sunday school classes, this is a valuable book and one that will serve you well. It will draw your mind, your heart and your affections to the One True God. I highly recommend it and agree with Iain Murray--a young Christian could scarcely do better than to work through it with care, keeping his Bible open all the while.

Meets A Real Need!

There are many excellent books on the attributes of God (e.g., Pink, Charnock Tozer), but this one meets a real need: the need for students of the Word to encounter the God of the Bible through the text of the Bible itself. This workbook is geared more towards new believers, but it should not be relegated to "beginner material" as there is plenty of meat here for all Christians to profit from. In short, if you desire a more intimate knowledge of the God of the Bible by digging into the Scriptures themselves, then this book is for you.

Great read!

This was a great read of two very in depth interviews with Johnny Depp. Unlike many stars Depp comes across as real, giving the reader actual insight into the man himself. As I've come to expect of Playboy interviews in general this is not a fluff piece such as other magazines *cough* Entertainment Weekly *cough* would provide nor are the interviews the gossip fodder of tabloids. If you are a fan of Johnny Depp you won't be disappointed in this read.

This interview was published in 2000. Jon Stewart was just starting his tenure on the Daily Show. It'd be interesting to read an interview with him now, as he's wrapping up his work on that show. Stewart is still young and a bit inexperienced, but it's still basically the Jon Stewart we've all come to know - sharp wit and a thinking human being.

Focusing on the works of Herman Melville, Gore Vidal, Russell Banks, Lionel Trilling, and Philip Roth, Hutchison finds a critique of liberalism put forth by classical republicanism, transcendentalism, Marxism, and neoconservatism at their respective moments of historical ascent. He shows how these authors take very specific historical periods and episodes for their subject matter and interrogate, critique, and contextualize pivotal moments in the intellectual history of American liberalism. In their work, liberalism reconstitutes itself in the face of competing ideological pressures, demonstrating that the novel is very much characterized by a "republican" concern with the health of the polity.

Considering such artists, philosophers, and theorists as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Hannah Arendt, and John Dewey, alongside numerous contemporary commentators and historians, Hutchison repositions American novelists as serious political thinkers. He reveals Melville's Moby Dick to be the formal template for the American political novel and compares and contrasts its embodiment of "republican" fiction with the "democratic" mode Mikhail Bakhtin associates with Dostoevsky. He especially draws attention to the meaning of republicanism in the early national period, the place of abolitionism in the Civil War, and the post-1930s liberal retreat from Left radicalism.

By concentrating on the tension between issues of liberalism and morality in the political thought of these American novelists, Hutchison hopes to advance a more nuanced and textured understanding of the U.S. political tradition. He scrutinizes a number of critical studies and makes a cogent case for a more interdisciplinary approach to the American political novel that focuses less on the politics of representation and more on the representation of politics.

Though the political novel in America has been much written about, I don't know any other critical book that situates fiction in the context of major debates about the nature of 'the Republic' or takes so much care in defining the 'liberal' idea. The novels studied in this book take on a depth and resonance that they have not had before and can be read in new and more serious ways.

So many typos! Interesting story, sometimes unbelievable

I was annoyed by the typos; I highlighted 20, but I probably did not catch them all. If typos bother you, I do not recommend this book for you. There were parts that I though were a bit unbelievable. For example, sibling-like friendships achieved within weeks, a girl that just graduated from high school 3 months earlier telling a grown woman with two children what is best for the woman's daughters, mastering martial arts in less than three months, and among other things. Despite this, I do like the story line, and I may feel compelled to read the second book. I just hope there are fewer errors and that the author is more realistic about what can be accomplished within the time frame of the story.

Could Use More Editing

I enjoyed the concept of this book and liked the characters, the main character had the potential to be stupidly annoying, but managed to avoid that pitfall and come across as normal. Overall it was a pretty good read. However, this book could use a heavy dose of editing. I'm not talking the typical misspelled words or grammatical errors, but content and continuity editing.

For instance, there are a few sentences near the end, during the climactic showdown with the bad guy, where the main character screams and struggles against her bonds...the only problem is, she isn't put INTO those bonds until a paragraph later. Huh? It's VERY distracting and really messes up the flow when you have to re-read passages three or four times to try and figure out if you missed reading something, incorrectly inferred something or the book is just wrong. ESPECIALLY when you are supposed to engrossed in the middle of an action scene. If it was just once I would ignore it, but I can think of at least THREE instances off the top of my head.

There were also scenes where a good editor would have suggested fleshing out the descriptions more or improving flow and content. A bunch of times technology just came up out of the blue, or a power (not previously mentioned, of course) helped out and no one was really surprised, or it seemed a couple of paragraphs were accidentally deleted because WHAT the heck are they talking about, or you have to re-read a scene a few times because the descriptions are so vague or choppy you can't picture the scene in your head. I spent a good 10% of this novel confused or backtracking to try and figure out if I skipped or forgot information... I hadn't.

These are two major problems dragging down an otherwise pretty good book, making it feel more like a draft than final copy.

I enjoyed this book and will likely read the sequel, but I strongly urge the author to find a good (or better) editor and do a bit of re-writing. Another book with problems like this and I won't waste my time with a third novel by this author.

So Addicted!

I received a review copy of this book and it is utterly amazing. I was totally lost in the story and by the time I finished, it was 2:30 am! Catherine did an amazing job mixing the paranormal with the criminal in this action packed story. Adie is an amazing character who is very easy to relate to. Throughout the entire book you find yourself rooting for this heroine and hanging on to every word of her self-discovery. I love the fact that Catherine hinted at certain things during the story but wouldn't give you a straight answer until the very end. As if this story could get any better, Catherine put a teaser from the second book in the series at the end and all I can say is OMG! You do not know what you are missing and I highly suggest everyone find out soon. This story is not only for a YA audience but an adult audience as well who loves twisted tales of deceit and criminal mischief.

Taboo is the New Normal

Among the many misimpressions westerners tend to have of China, sex as some kind of "taboo" topic here seems to be the most common, if not clichéd. Forgetting for a moment that, owing to a population of 1.3 billion, somebody must be doing it, what most of us don't seem to know is that, at several points throughout the millennia, China has been a society of extreme sexual openness.

And now, according to author Richard Burger's new book Behind the Red Door, the Chinese are once again on the verge of a sexual revolution.

Best know for his knives-out commentary on The Peking Duck, one of China's longest-running expat blogs, Burger takes a similar approach to surveying the subject of sex among the Sinae, leaving no explicit ivory carving unexamined, no raunchy ancient poetry unrecited, and *ahem* no miniskirt unturned.

Opening (metaphorically and literally) with an introduction about hymen restoration surgery, Burger delves dàndàn-deep into the olden days of Daoism, those prurient practitioners of free love who encouraged multiple sex partners as "the ultimate co-joining of Yin and Yang." Promiscuity, along with prostitution, flourished during the Tang Dynasty - recognized as China's cultural zenith - which Burger's research surmises is no mere coincidence.

Enter the Yuan Dynasty, and its conservative customs of Confucianism, whereby sex became regarded only "for the purpose of producing heirs." As much as we love to hate him, Mao Zedong is credited as single-handedly wiping out all those nasty neo-Confucius doctrines, including eliminating foot binding, forbidding spousal abuse, allowing divorce, banning prostitution (except, of course, for Party parties), and encouraging women to work. But in typical fashion, laws were taken too far; within 20 years, China under Mao became a wholly androgynous state.

We then transition from China's red past into the pink-lit present, whence "prostitution is just a karaoke bar away," yet possession of pornography is punishable by imprisonment - despite the fact that millions of single Chinese men (called "bare branches") will never have wives or even girlfriends due to gross gender imbalance. Burger laudably also tackles the sex trade from a female's perspective, including an interview with a housewife-turned-hair-salon hostess who, ironically, finds greater success with foreigners than with her own sex-starved albeit ageist countrymen.

Western dating practices among hip, urban Chinese are duly contrasted with traditional courtship conventions, though, when it comes down to settling down, Burger points out that the Chinese are still generally resistant to the idea that marriage can be based on love. This topic naturally segues into the all-but-acceptable custom of kept women ("little third"), as well as "homowives", those tens of millions of straight women trapped in passionless unions with closeted gay men out of filial piety.

Behind the Red Door concludes by stressing that while the Chinese remain a sexually open society at heart, contradictive policies (enforced by dubious statistics) designed to discard human desire are written into law yet seldom enforced, simply because "sexual contentment is seen as an important pacifier to keep society stable and harmonious."

A fine book, but not perfect

This is an excellent book, well researched and, most importantly, very well written. It manages to take arcane material, including what could become boring statistical data, and make it flow, keeping the reader engrossed. The author has created a narrative that spans thousands of years, and it reads like a very well written magazine article, fast-paced and filled with anecdotes and human characters that give the book a human feel. It is a fast and satisfying read. It is to the author's credit that he was able to secure interviews with prostitutes and pimps and ordinary people to humanize the material.

My one gripe is that he tells us quite sensibly in the introduction that it is impossible to draw neat and tidy conclusions about China's sexual revolution and where it is headed. Then, in the afterward, that is exactly what he tries to do, somewhat awkwardly. It's obvious he is trying to wrap it all up and come to an optimistic conclusion, but this seems forced, as though the author isn't sure himself whether he believes his own predictions. It's the one issue I had with the book. But that's a minor criticism, though I found it enough to lower my rating from 5 to 4 stars. The book is solid, and as far as I know there is no other book like it. Well worth the low price.
