Kent Nordström

Kent Nordström wrote his first lines of code in the late 70s so he's been working with IT for quite some time now. When Microsoft released its Windows 2000 operating system he started a close relationship with them that has continued since. For many years Kent has been working part time as a sub-contractor to Microsoft Consulting Services and has been doing many of the implementations of FIM and its predecessors for multinational companies and large organizations in Sweden. A great introduction to the subject

In the preface the author, Kent Nordstrom, states "If you are implementing and managing Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 in your business, then this is the book for you". I think this is true in many respects and not just because it is the only book on FIM 2010 R2 available! Chapter 2 "Overview" is a good introduction to the terminology and technology of Forefront Identity Manager (FIM). It's easy to read and gives you a start with the many moving parts that make up a FIM implementation. I'd bookmark the diagram on pages 15 & 17 as you'll find yourself referring to them as you read the rest of the book. However, this book is not for the network beginner - Kent assumes, for example, that you have a reasonable knowledge of managing an Active Directory environment. In a number of places he describes what to do without giving the technical details of how to do it. For example, in chapter 3 "Installation" there is good coverage of the key steps and major pitfalls are highlighted, but you'll want to read the instructions on the Microsoft Technet site for the details of the installation process.

Chapters 5, 6 and 7 cover user and group management, looking at synchronization between systems and the tricky issue of whether and how to delete items that have ended their life-cycle. One of the popular uses of FIM is also covered: self-service password reset, which allows users to reset their own passwords when they forget them. These chapters are where the text gets more technical and makes more assumptions regarding your previous knowledge. It was at this point that I started to need my own FIM test environment to follow along with the author. Now is a good time to go back and re-read chapters 2 and 4 and then re-read chapters 5, 6 and 7 for a better understanding.

Chapter 8 lacks the depth of previous chapters. It gives an overview of Office 365, Microsoft's cloud-based email and collaboration service, and discusses how Office 365 Directory Synchronization relates to FIM. You'll need some prior experience with Office 365 to get the most out of this chapter.

The FIM reporting functionality covered in chapter 9 is a new feature of the R2 version of FIM 2010. The reporting setup uses System Center Service Manager (SCSM) 2012 technology and you'll want to reach out to your SCSM specialist for support on this area as the coverage in the book is very brief.

The next three chapters introduce the reader to customizing the user interface and data transformations, and the penultimate chapter covers using FIM for certificate management. Chapter 13 describes how the author troubleshoots real-world issues when working on a Forefront Identity Manager implementation project.

You might be reading this book if you are preparing for the Microsoft Exam 70-158 "Forefront Indentity Manager 2010". If so you'll definitely want to study the plentiful extra documents that Kent provides the links to throughout the book.

Overall I think that those people planning to work with Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 have good reason to be grateful that Kent Nordstrom took the trouble to create this book. It certainly serves as an excellent starting point for learning about the product.

Kent has taken time to explain complex topic of Identity and FIM 2010 in easy to read and understand language. The book is filled with images to explain and walk through the concepts.
The Book is a easy read. The beginning chapters explains the basic installation in detail and then gets into the configuration. This is a great read for beginners to medium users who are looking at becoming FIM 2010 implementers.

Great for anyone starting out with FIM

FIM is a huge mystery for many IT professionals out there and with only the Microsoft technical documentation and a handful of infrequently updated blogs to learn from, it's no wonder. So, it's great to see something like the FIM 2010 R2 Handbook come along to provide a map for those that are looking to embark on their FIM journey.

When it comes to FIM, there's a lot to cover, and Kent has done a great job of distilling all of this down to just the essentials - the things that you most need to know if you're going to tackle a FIM deployment providing basic user and group management. He's also included a few chapters on some more advanced topics, to provide the detail on functionality that your organisation might want to implement, such as Self-Service Password Reset and managing identities within Office 365.

As an ILM/FIM Consultant with 5+ years experience, I found that the book exhibited a great level of implementation detail that you normally don't get from training manuals - the tips, tricks and 'gotchas' that you just don't know unless you have solid experience using the product. I even learnt a few neat tricks I didn't know! There's also a great level of detail in here about features that are new to R2 of FIM, such as reporting.

It's not the comprehensive, be-all-and-end-all of FIM knowledge, but that would be impossible to create for FIM. All up, it's certainly a great introduction to the product suite, with enough information to do a deployment, as well as a plethora of links for each topic, showing where you can go to get more detailed information to cover more complex scenarios.

When he'd come to Thunder Canyon five months ago looking for his biological parents, Shane Roarke never expected to find out that his father was in jail for stealing from the town. So far his mother's identity was still a mystery, but maybe that was for the best. Did he really want to meet the woman who'd shown the bad judgment to hook up with a criminal? And what did that say about his own DNA?

He'd arrived a city-slicker chef with a list of questions about who he was. Now he had half the answers and a lot to lose if anyone else found out. The information and what to do about it weighed heavy on his mind.

In June he'd taken the executive chef position at The Gallatin Room, the fine-dining restaurant at Thunder Canyon Resort. With successful restaurants in L.A., New York and Seattle it had been a career step-down, but necessary for personal reasons. Now he was the definition of a man in conflict—part of him wished he'd never come, while the other part really liked this town. "Oh, you're still here—"

Shane looked up from the glass of wine in front of him to the redhead who'd just walked into his kitchen. Gianna Garrison was a waitress and part-time bartender on his staff. In the big cities where he'd worked his name had been linked to models, actresses and celebrities, but he'd never seen a more beautiful woman than the one in front of him now, looking like a deer caught in headlights.

"I'm still here," he agreed.

"Like the captain of a ship."

"The last to leave." He smiled.

Gianna was wearing the black slacks and long-sleeved white shirt all the waitresses wore but it looked better on her. The tucked-in blouse accentuated breasts, not too big or too small, which only left just right. Her waist was trim, her legs slim and that curly, shoulder-length red hair always got his attention even from across a crowded room. Close-up was even better.

"Sorry to bother you." She started to back out of the room. "I'll just be going."

She wasn't bothering him. In fact she'd done him a favor. Shane realized the last thing he wanted was to be alone with his dark thoughts.

"Wait. We were a waitress short tonight." Pretty lame stating the obvious, but he'd just switched mental gears and it was the best he could come up with to stop her from leaving.

"Yeah, Bonnie has a bad cold. Coughing, sneezing and breathing germs on that party of ski executives from Switzerland seemed counterproductive to the goal."

Shane nodded. "Convincing them that Thunder Canyon has the snow, slopes and service to make it a winter vacation destination for Europeans."

"Right. And have you seen any of those movies on the flu pandemic and how disease spreads? We wouldn't want Thunder Canyon identified as ground zero by the Centers for Disease Control. The Swiss would probably hear about it."

"That wouldn't be good. Bonnie was wise to call herself off."

The humor sparkling in her eyes made them almost turquoise. He hadn't noticed that before, which wasn't surprising. Between work, looking for his birth parents and feeling guilty about it on account of his real parents who loved him unconditionally, he'd been a little preoccupied. Now she was only a couple of feet away and he noticed that her eyes were wide and beautiful, like the Caribbean Ocean. If he wasn't careful, he could drown in them.

"So one waitress less means you worked twice as hard," he said.

She lifted one shoulder in a no-big-deal gesture. "I just moved faster, smiled more and dazzled them with the Garrison wit, hoping they had no idea it was taking just a little longer to get their orders delivered. The complimentary bottle of wine you sent over to the table didn't hurt, either. By the way, they raved about the food and seemed surprised. You'd think the invention of Swiss cheese entitled them to culinary domination of the universe."

"I'm guessing you didn't say that to them."

"No." She grinned.

"The head of the delegation complimented me on the food and service before they left. He promised me maximum stars, diamonds, happy faces, thumbs-up, however they designate their rating. Without you I couldn't have pulled that off, Gianna."

Her wit wasn't the only thing about her that dazzled. When she smiled, her face lit up like the town square decorated for Christmas. "I'm flattered you noticed."

"I make it my business to notice. It crossed my mind to come out to help serve, but I couldn't get away."

"Cooking is what you do. Delivering what you cook is my job."

"There's more to it than that. Even when the food is good it's not always easy to keep the customer happy. But you make it look easy. Tonight you did a fantastic job."

"I just handled it," she said modestly.

"You always do. You're one of my best waitresses. Thanks for all your hard work. I appreciate it very much."

"No problem. It's what you pay me for but it's nice to hear you say it." Gianna backed up a little more. "I'll just be going now."

No, he thought. Her dazzle kept the dark away and he wasn't ready for it to come back yet. He wanted her to stay. Saying that straight out might make her nervous, think he was hitting on her. That wasn't his intention. The pleasure of her company was his only goal; the question was how to achieve it.

All Shane could come up with was a delaying tactic. "Did you want something?"

"Why do you ask?"

"You came in the kitchen."

"Oh, that. It's just, you know—" Her shrug did interesting things to her breasts. "Tonight's special looked and smelled amazing so…"

"You're hungry." Of course. What other reason would she have for coming here when her shift was over. After a mental forehead slap, he said, "Doing the work of two people didn't leave time for a dinner break."

"It's my own fault. I missed the staff meal before service started. I'll just grab something on the way home."

"No." He stood and walked over to her. "The least I can do is feed you. And there will be a glass of wine involved."

"Don't make a mess on my account. The dishwasher and prep crew already cleaned up."

"But I'm the boss. I have a nice Pino Grigio already uncorked and it pairs well with the spinach and crab ravioli." He led her to the stool he'd just vacated then pressed gently on her shoulders, urging her to sit. The slight touch ignited a need in his belly and the instinct to pull her against him was unexpectedly powerful.

It was his business to notice workflow in the restaurant and he had. Just because it wasn't his job to be attracted to someone working the flow didn't make the attraction any less real. But he still wasn't hitting on her. This was just a gesture. A happy staff didn't quit and contented workers kept things running smoothly. Training a new waitress was time consuming and costly.

"I was going to have something myself. Please join me."

"Okay, then. Thanks." She rested her heel on the metal rung of the stool and crossed one leg over the other.

The movement was graceful, sexy, and it was an effort to pull his gaze away. On his first day at The Gallatin Room, Gianna Garrison had caught his eye, but for professional and personal reasons he'd resisted the impulse to act on the temptation. Until tonight.

Just before Thanksgiving he'd received conclusive proof that Arthur Swinton, the most hated man in Thunder Canyon, was his biological father. The information had weighed on him over the last couple of days and he was low on willpower. That was the best explanation he could come up with for this lapse in professional judgment. It was time to do his chef thing and take his mind off other things.

While he worked assembling plates, warming food, pouring wine, Gianna chattered away. He let her, liking the sound of her voice, the warm honey with just a hint of gravel. Then something she said tapped into his dark mood again.

"The Thanksgiving dinner you prepared last week for military families was amazing. Everyone in town is talking about it. Angie Anderson and Forrest Traub told me how thrilled the families were, how special and appreciated they felt for their loved ones' sacrifices."

He'd been more preoccupied than usual since that night. People had looked at him like he walked on water and he felt like a fraud. How could he be a walk on water type when Arthur Swinton was his biological father? The man had been convicted and sent to jail for embezzling public funds. Not only that, he'd perpetrated a conspiracy to ruin the Traubs, one of the most prominent families in town. If there was someone who didn't hate Swinton, Shane hadn't met them yet.

Gianna smiled at him. "They said it really helped because of missing their loved ones overseas so much, especially around the holidays."

"I know something about missing family," Shane whispered.

"What's that?" she asked.

He slid hot food onto two plates, then looked over his shoulder. "You're missing something if you don't eat this while it's hot."

"It looks wonderful and smells even better."

He put the two steaming plates on the stainless-steel countertop, then pulled up another stool and sat at a right angle to her. "Dig in."

"Okay." After she did, her gaze met his. "This is sinfully good. I don't even want to think about the calories."

"It's a little-known fact that when you do the work of two people calories don't count."

"Thank goodness. Because this tastes even better than it smells and it smells very fattening." She licked a drop of white wine sauce from her lower lip.

i enjoyed reading this book. I have been reading this series for the past 2 months.. I think other readers will feel the same.

Pretty Good Book

It took me a while to get into this book. I really wanted to like it and in the end, I did enjoy it but there was something in the beginning that stalled me. I was slightly irritated that there were sooo many characters. His family, her family, old friends, couples of the town (that dont really add to the story line). It might seem petty but I can think of at least 8+ off the top of my head that were mentioned, described and included in the book that didnt add any real value. I also felt like at 30 and someone who had lived on her own, she was very childish and niave at times. Overall, it was a good book which is why I gave it 4 stars.

Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel book 0.5

So before I start this review I guess I'd better make a confession - the main reason I wanted to read this book was the cover. I mean come on - the picture is of a half naked, extremely hot fireman and he's holding a puppy! - what's not to love about that? My love of a sexy cover has got me in trouble quite a few times in the past though when the contents of the book don't manage to live up to my expectations so I'm very happy to say that isn't the case with this one. Even the book title fits perfectly because I can tell you right now that Kirk is One Fine Fireman! This was my introduction to Jennifer Bernard's writing and I can tell you now I'm already hooked on this series, in fact I'm planning on starting the next book, The Fireman who Loved me, as soon as I finish writing this review.

Fireman Kirk (known as Thor to his colleagues thanks to his Viking like good looks) has had a crush on waitress Maribel for years. His crush is well known about by the other firemen, in fact his attraction to her is the only reason they visit the coffee shop where she works, but they tease him mercilessly because he has never had the courage to act on his attraction towards her. Maribel has always found herself drawn to Kirk but shyness and the small matter of her engagement to another man has stopped her from ever doing anything about it. It wasn't until Kirk's absence from the shop for the last few months that she realised just how much she looked forward to his visits though. Kirk had his reasons for staying away from the coffee shop, and even now he is preparing to move across the country and knows there is no chance of anything happening between him and Maribel but thanks to a young boy, an abandoned dog and an arson attack the pair find themselves spending more time together than ever before. Can they both put their shyness and reservations to one side for long enough to realise how perfect they are for each other?

I thoroughly enjoyed One Fine Fireman, considering this is a novella Jennifer Bernard did a brilliant job of creating three dimensional characters that I cared about and wanted to see have their happy ending. Both Kirk and Maribel have their vulnerabilities but at the same time they are fighters, they have been through tough times but come out stronger on the other side and they both have a lot of love to offer. I found it absolutely hilarious the way they both got so shy and tongue tied around each other, their stuttered and stilted conversations were extremely cute and had me laughing out loud numerous times. Add in Maribel's adorable nine year old son Pete and Hagrid the dog and I just couldn't put the story down.

This was a great introduction to the series, I loved what I saw of the rest of the firemen and I'm excited that the next two books are already available and even better they're both full length novels. If the author can make me love a novella this much then I have extremely high hopes for a longer story! If you're looking for a romance that is sweet, funny but also very steamy then this is a great place to start and I can't recommend One Fine Fireman highly enough.

An Amazing Hero But Wishy-Washy Heroine Combine for a Sweet and Satisfying Story

One Fine Fireman was a pleasant read that left me with a warm fuzzy feeling and showed a promising start to a series of books featuring other sexy firefighters that I look forward to reading over the next few months. With its likable characters, sentimental storyline, and nice balance of action and romance, Jennifer Bernard gives readers a feel-good story that ends with a satisfying conclusion.

Maribel has thought of herself as engaged for years, but the man constantly on her mind is firefighter Kirk, aka Thor. Even though he says very little to her it's the highlight of her day and she misses him when he's gone. After he finally makes his move on her, with the help of her young son, it's almost too late to get her to admit the truth of her feelings before he's forced to leave town to save his life. Maribel is a kind-hearted character, a bit flighty at times and not as smart as her young son when it comes to her fiancée. I was left frustrated by her through the first half of the book because of her indecision in dumping her uncaring and superficial fiancée, especially after Kirk's loving declaration. In the next instant though I admired her unquestionable support of Kirk and his deeply scarred body. She made him feel strong again after his disease made him feel weak. She helped him feel like a hero again.

After a battle against cancer that has left his body scarred and his mind tired, all the sexy Kirk wants to do is finally be brave enough to tell Maribel how he's felt about her for ages. After befriending her son and a stray dog wiser than most humans he finally gets the chance. His heartfelt declaration made me swoon and made me like him even more. Unlike Maribel's wishy-washyness, Kirk knew exactly what he wanted and made the most of his opportunity to claim Maribel who was still uncertain about her future with her fiancee. The scene involving his emotional declaration was both sweet and sexy and left me frustrated at first.

Only through a life and death situation that comes out of nowhere towards the very end of the story does Maribel finally understand which of the men in her life truly cares for her and her son and a quickly achieved HEA can result. Kirk's fellow firefighters were a delightful addition to this story! Their playful banter with Kirk was realistic and charming and has me excited for their individual stories to be told. Maribel's son Pete was a wonderful addition too with great insight for one so young and who helped add a fairytale feel to the story with his innocent and magical outlook on life. These secondary characters were constantly working to help Kirk and Maribel get their HEA and without their intervention this book wouldn't have had the satisfying ending that it did.

Fully fleshed-out characters, playful and realistic friendly banter, and a heartfelt declaration of love lead to an entertaining and satisfying story. The talent that Ms. Bernard shows here gives me high hopes for the rest of the series. So bring on those sexy firefighters!

FIVE-ALARM FIRE!

Kirk nicknamed "Thor" (for his resemblance to the God), returns to the San Gabriel Fire Department after a bout with skin cancer. His plans are to finish up his duties and relocate to another area where the sun isn't so hot and dangerous for his skin.

Maribel works as a waitress at the Lazy Daisy, an establishment frequented by the scorchingly HOT Bachelor Fireman. Maribel is shy and has secretly had a crush on Kirk for years, not knowing that he had the same feelings toward her. With some help from her son and an abandoned dog the two of them find there is enough heat between them to cause a five-alarm fire. Many obstacles stand in their way, namely Kirk's plans to move, Maribel's engagement, will they overcome all obstacles to find real love?

One Fine Fireman is the prequel to Jennifer Bernard's Bachelor Fireman series. She packs a lot into the short format! It has wonderful chemistry, lots of steam and is full of action! I had the pleasure of reading this first and have since bought the other two books in the series and proceeded to finish them both off in just two days! Let's just say if you plan to read these keep a large glass of ice water handy!

Hot hero, hot heroine, hot lovin'

Uh, yeah. This one is hot.

Zandra and Remington (seriously ... the names) have known each other since they were kids. Remington's family, in fact, is Zandra's surrogate; they take care of her where her own family cannot. All those years together fostered a bond between Remington and Zandra, and no small amount of lust.

Of course, this won't go smoothly at all.

Zandra owns an escort agency. NOT A BROTHEL. It's an ESCORT agency. Her girls are not hookers, she pays her taxes, and it is a legit business.

Or at least it appears to be. Some suspect otherwise. And when Zandra's estranged father decides to run for Mayor of Chicago, he is smart enough to realize that his daughter's agency will be a thorn in his side. He asks her to shut it down; she refuses. Zandra respects her father about as much as she does a slug. Less, even. Meanwhile, former Navy SEAL Remington runs a security firm and is approached by Zandra's father's opponent to investigate Zandra's company. The candidate is convinced that it really is a prostitution ring. Remington doesn't want to do this, but he's convinced that if he does, he can help Zandra.

One way he knows he will help her is by rocking her headboard ... hard. She's hot, he's hot, and together they scorch. If I were Zandra, I would not care in the least what Remington Brand investigates, so long as he's investigating ME. And he's naked while doing it. Remington knows exactly what to do to please a woman, and he does it as often as he can to Zandra. She's no slouch herself, and maybe she can teach us girls a thing or two about taking care of a man.

So, yeah, while they suffer through a few bumps in the road, Remington and Zandra also set fire to the night ... or day, as it were. They are good characters, fun to read about, and did I mention the sex scenes? Yes? Are you sure? Because it bears repeating: the sex scenes are HOT.

If for no other reason, you should read this one.

I thought Roderick Brand was hot in Whatever You Like but HOLY COW!!!!!! loved Remington. This book was hotter than the first one and that was pretty hot. I was so glad this started off where the first story ended. The relationship between Remy and Zandra was as sweet as it was scorching hot. The way that everyone gradually realizes that the so called brother/sister relationship they've had since they were little was unknowingly always something more was fun to read. As they came to terms with their new relationship, oooo wwweee. Hot, hot then sizzling hot. Loved this book from beginning to end. From the beach, to Chicago, to LONDON(whew), back home to trouble and back to the beach this book was non-stop goodness. I've always had a liking for military men but Remy had me wanting to go hang out near a Naval base. Zandra was just what he needed cause she was straight up fire. She made sure that her man need look no further. I really loved that more of the family was in this one. They have all loved her since she was little and treated her as one of their own so that made the relationship between the two of them even sweeter because the family has been waiting for this, for Remy. I loved what he said her mom said at the end too. I LOVED this book. Go head Mrs. Smith. You rock!!! P.S. loved the fact that she dropped in the Wolf Pack.

You Can Have It Any Way You Want It!!!

"Any Way You Want It" was a seductive cat and mouse game! By the third chapter I was about to combust! Mrs. Smith wrote the most erotic sex scenes! I had to fan myself many a times. Although, the chemistry between Zhondra and Remy were off the charts the book was more than an erotic romance. Zhondra as well as Remy had to battle many demons to get to the level of trust and love. Zhondra had to battle demons of abuse, self-worth and trust. I loved the development of the relationship between the two characters. At time Zhondra annoyed me with her silly hang ups by the end I understood why it was so hard for her to open her heart up too love. Mixed with political scandal, a sexually explicit thrust in London, and family Mrs. Smith brought the FIRE with this book. I loved that even though she writes about these different families her heart is not far from the Wolf Pack! They are absolutely my most favorite family. This wasn't one of my favorite books by Mrs. Smith but it was a good read nonetheless. I can't wait to see what 2013 holds for Mrs. Smith. I always enjoy her work and the craftily written tales she writes. Good job Maureen!!!
