Matt & Trey Skewer Hollywood - The Birth of South Park

This interview was conducted in 2000. The movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was just released and was a success. Parker & Stone had made a few other movies and had a few seasons of South Park under their belt, but seemed to be fatalistic about their future in Hollywood, so it was definitely an interesting time to interview them.

By now, in 2013, Stone & Parker have been interviewed so often and discussed their work in so many places that the information here is really nothing new. Unlike many of the other classic Playboy interviews from this series which occurred from the 1950's to the 1990's, Stone & Parker have been thoroughly vetted by the internet and there is not much we don't already know about their careers and the genesis of South Park. One interesting little tidbit was at the time of the interview they did not visualize South Park lasting more than a few more seasons, they imagined a body of about 70 episodes. Considering that South Park is nearing season 20, I found this to be an amusing thing.

One of the greatest things about Parker & Stone, based on more recent interviews and work, is the fact they are among the rare few who have stayed true to their own vision and have not compromised to success after all these years. They hated celebrity pretentiousness then as they hate it now and the rest of us are more than happy to let them continue to poke away at it for our amusement.

Great Insights

A bit dated since they would go on to make way more shows than they said they would here, but still a great read. These guys talk so little about what they do that stuff like this ends up giving truer insight into what makes them great. From their passion to humility to thoughts on creativity, this was a solid article for any fans of them as a creative duo.

Will I never learn?

Should have known better at my age. It's written by a bunch of blokes who make Parker and Stone sound like a pair of loud and foul-mouthed brats. Well, Parker & Stone would have to be a bit that way, or South Park would never have happened. But it's like the the underpants gnomes' business plan - Step Two remains a mystery, ie how they came up with a work of genius and got rich, remains a mystery.
This is the sort of story best left to a woman.

Not sure if I read the same series as everyone else...

I want to start by saying I'm reviewing the series as a whole, not just Balancer. I plan to copy paste (with a few changes) to Jaunten as well.

I'd like to start with the good things. The world building was excellent and the pacing was solid enough, until the end.

That said, I ended up not feeling very positive about the story or characters as a whole.

The bad guys were pure evil (not to mention incredibly stupid), and the good guys were saints. There was no real conflict, as Garth (and the other protagonists) were completely and utterly more powerful than their foes. It was four books of "hide and go seek" where there were only a couple of scenes of minor drama. The political leaders were so impossibly nice that was almost sickening. Two kings of neighboring countries were practically best friends and completely selfless, without even the tiniest concern for their own personal power. In fact, every "good" character had no negative qualities. Even Kartal (the "obnoxious one") was perfectly fine, and only seemed even moderately negative in contrast to the sugary goodness of everyone else. The nauseating protagonists, the nameless, yet unrelatably evil, antagonists, and the completely overpowering strength of the protagonists that made any attempt by the antagonists to foil them seem pitiful removed any potential drama or connection to the characters. There was no climax in the entire series, just one easy victory after the other.

Finally, the entire last 30% of the book is taken over by wedding plans. Seriously, that's the epic conclusion? Picking out colors and seating assignments?

I really wanted to like this series, which is probably why the disappointment was that much more palpable after I completed it.

I'm not sure who wrote all the 5 star reviews, and if they read the same series I did, but as a work of fiction I was incredibly disappointed by the plot, characters, and conclusion. It is clear that the writer has a talent for world building and pacing, but shows a lack of ability to create a dramatic plot that engages the reader and develop characters in such a way that they are relatable. I hope in the writer's next attempt that her style matures, as I want to see more of the world of the Advent Mage Cycle, just with real characters and an actual plot.

Light and entertaining

Even though I loved it, after finishing the final instalment of the Wheel of Time, I was looking to read something...shall we say less intense? This series was the perfect antidote! It is not an 'epic', but it is well written, light, frothy and amusing....and sometimes that just hits the spot!

The Stunning Conclusion to the Advent Mage Cycle

The story continues where the last one left off and right away you're thrust into the middle of a fight with the Star Order. In this book, Garth navigates the various pitfalls of politics and social niceties, trying to please two kings and the various nobles throughout while also feverishly working to keep each kingdom from falling apart. You'll see harrowing action, love, mystery, and a ton of humorous situations. The tale doesn't end where you expect it to, and in fact, covers a number of events most authors tend to just gloss over during the course of a more 'traditional' fantasy novel.

Those interested in the perspective of other characters will get a chance to experience events from another POV. Additionally, a lot of the events of the past that were hinted at are really flushed out in this book and you really get a sense of how things came to be. Personally, I didn't think the relationship between Garth and Chatta would be as interesting in this one. In my mind, as soon as the protagonist bags the love interest, *boom* story's over... I expect it to then end with some cheesy line like, "...and then they lived happily ever after." However, in this case the author really manages to keep the interest between the two at an all-time high. Chatta is no less strong-willed or intelligent now that she's "attached," and the couple experiences sweet, romantic situations without the writing becoming too lovey-dovey.

All in all, I think this series has come a long way and I'm more than satisfied with where it ended. There is a lot that's left unexplained or unexplored, but the main stuff is covered and I think it's something of a requirement for a good book to leave you wanting more. If you're looking at this review, you've likely read the previous three books. In that case, you definitely don't want to miss out on this one, it's probably the best one yet.
