Much ado and many words to ultimately say nothing at all
By Leib Gershon Mitchell
There are lots of problems with this book from the outset:

1 The age/ quality of the sources:

a. This book was put together from some older publications. The dates listed in the front matter of the book are 1955 and 1967. It is also stated in the conclusion that the book would not be updated (p. 276-- "It is therefore understandable why we never rewrite a work once it has been published.").
b. In the time since the book was printed (shortly after the crystal structure of DNA was solved), genetic fingerprinting has been developed as well as the concept of haplotypes/ haplogroups.
c. Therefore, the things that this book relies on (anecdotal evidence and paintings) could be ignored in favor of actual genetic data..
d. Most of the reviews on this book were written years after molecular genetics had reached its maturity, and that makes me wonder if most people have treated this as a science or if they are using this in the same way that a Jihadist uses his Quran.
e. So many anthropologists. So many historical sources translated two and three times between different languages.
f. The sources seem to be mainly philosophers (e.g, Karl Marx), linguists, and anthropologists (e.g., Leakey). The fact that there are no molecular geneticists can be attributed to the fact that that field had not reached its maturity yet-- but it does not excuse the fact that the book is just empirically wrong.

2. The notion of race:

a. Either you believe that race is "socially constructed" or that it exists in reality.
b. In the case that you believe the first, then what is the point of this book? If there is no such thing as a black/ white/ Asian race, then they can't exist to build societies/ countries, can they?
c. In the case that you believe the second idea (that race has biological and physical reality), then it's much easier to find *current* genetic evidence that is produced by people who can actually produce it in large quantities (i.e., molecular geneticists--real scientists).
d. He cites Richard Leakey from the beginning (xv) as saying that human beings have monogenetic origins. (Leakey is an anthropologist who died before genetic fingerprinting could be born.) How did Leakey know this? Leakey is quoted again and again throughout the book.

3. Consistency with reality:

a. In Spencer Wells The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey, the problems of man's genetic origin is already solved (again! molecular genetics). It directly refutes what this author is saying.
b. Does this thesis really make sense? (The point of a thesis is to explain extant data and NOT to create a narrative.) The Sahara Desert is something like 2983 miles from North to South. Smaller geographic obstacles have created much larger gaps between genetic populations. (North and South Chinese. North and South Indians. East and West Africans.)

4. Philosophical and Conceptual Issues:

a. Ok, so black people created Egypt. So now what. If you take it as a given that blacks really created and ran Egypt, then what does that have to do with problems that modern Africans are facing today? (HIV/AIDS. Infant Mortality. Political instability.)
b. If the Africans of then were so good at statecraft, then why are the ones of today having such problems getting it right?
c. If Africans of yesterday developed a system as good as what was in Egypt, then why didn't they steamroll over the whole African continent (and parts of Europe, too), turning them in the Black Egyptians? (China started out much smaller than it is today, and they crushed everything that was in their way until China became as big as it is now.)
d. If Greek and Egyptian society were of African origin, does that really have anything to do with modern times? Singapore is a society of Chinese origin (and some people have said that it is the most successful Chinese society in the last several thousand years), but Singapore of today is miles apart from the China of Qinshihuang.

5. The prose:

I think it's been said that "If academic writings were difficult because of the deep thoughts involved, that might be understandable, even if frustrating. Seldom is that the case, however. Jaw-breaking words often cover up very sloppy thinking." Truer words never spoken than in this case.

There is also no index in the book.

Verdict: Not worth the money. Not worth the time. Genetics has gone a long way since the time of this book, and a person would be best served by catching up with those advances.
