I love this set of gorgeous books!

I love this set of books. I'm so glad I finally made the decision to buy them after pondering for a long while. They are gorgeous on the shelf to look at (I am in love with all the covers!) and have a great hand feel when being read. I must say that I am a 35 year old woman and I bought these books for myself. Somehow I missed reading all the classics as a young girl and am now making up for it. I'm not sure if I would buy these books for a young child because the set is expensive and kids can have accidents or be careless and this set is so nice it would be a shame for something to happen to it. If I had to give this set an age rating it would be 10 and up, or maybe even 12 and up. That being said, I can see these being an amazing heirloom quality gift on any occasion for avid readers of any age. I'm so pleased that I'm starting my collection of the classics with this wonderful set! I smile every time I walk by and see the covers. *Edited January 14, 2014. I've read through several of these books in the last few months and have no problems with the bindings at all. Also there is no glue on the bindings of the set I purchased.

The worst modern-day binding I've run across from a major publisher

This is a review of the product -- the book binding, etc. -- since the books included in this set (THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS, etc. -- can be found elsewhere in hardcover and paperback.
I ordered four of the Puffin "hardcover" books a year ago, from Amazon Uk. So the books I received are the same as advertised here. Take it from me, the binding is the absolute WORST I've run across when buying _modern_, newly published books, especially from a major publisher. Hence the use of quotes when typing hardcover. There is a bit of glue on the binding, that is it. It reminds of the sort of biding on runs across when encountering the books that American book clubs; or the sort of binding I used to encounter when buying books printed in the UK back in the '70s and '80s -- even the early '90s. Practically nonexistent. And the covers of the books seem to have been cobbled together from the cheapest sort of cardboard. The actual pages inside are of lesser quality, too.
The titles published in this set are classics, meant to be read and reread, and passed down from generation to generation. Parents and gift givers would do better to seek out the books elsewhere. Though the books originally sold for around $20 each, the quality one gets for that price (or for the inflated price of this set) is not up to standard. Especially when you consider the quality of books like those made by the Library of America (which generally hovers around the $20-$30 range, for solid books containing, three or four or more titles each) or the Penguin Drop Caps titles, which not only are very well-made, but are works of art in themselves. If ADULT classics can been be reissued and published with such care and concern, so can children's classics.
