Just as David makes his Christmas gift from materials right at hand, Jesse Stuart has made this story from the experiences of his own life. Like David, Stuart knew the smell of woodsmoke, the sight and sound of bees around a wild bee tree, and the sound of hounds trailing possums and coons. Another great book from Jesse Stuart

More than the sharing of how David and his Grandmother are able to find and harvest honey from a bee tree and nurse an abandoned hound puppy to health, the author gives us a wonderful and heart-warming story of giving of oneself. This now rates as a favorite Christmas book to be shared with our children and their families as well as others.

Westside fourth grader loves The Beatinest Boy

The book, The Beatinest Boy is about a boy named David who went up on a mountain one day and found a coon puppy in a hollow log that had the mange. In the book, The Beatinest Boy, it is a real setting because it had mountains and flowers and grass. David, Grandma Beverly, and Boliver were believable characters because David had decisions to make like real people and he likes to coon hunt and real people like to coon hunt. Daid was a likable person because he was cheerful and he liked to do fun stuff. I liked the story and it was exciting because when David goes coon hunting and when he robbed the bees exciting things happened. When David went coon hunting, he had to climb a high tree to get a coon. Robbing the bees was exciting because I was wondering if he was going to get stung alot. My favorite part of the story was when he went up on the mountain and found the puppy because I wish I could find a puppy. What the main character learned from this book is that you always shouldn't always kill what you catch. I would recommend this book for a friend because it has lots of exciting events like when David and his Grandma robbed the bees. If my friend liked this book he/she would also like Old Ben.

good read for sure

Jesse Stuart the Kentucky author that bring to life the old days when men used mules to plow their ground.
his stories are full of life. some of his tales are witty, some are of a serious note but always entertaining.
Stuart would have to be the best Kentucky author that ever lived. He was born poor and his father could not read of write.
Jesse went on with his life and got and education and taught school and later become a writer of all kind of stories related
to his beloved Homeland of Kentucky.
