A Wonderful Little Gem

Modern readers are often amazed at the content of Aelred of Rievaulx's SPIRITUAL FRIENDSHIP. Immediately people may ask "What would a twelfth century Cistercian abbot have to say about friendship?" The answer turns out to be "Quiet a bit". St. Aelred takes Cicero's writings on friendship and gives them a Christian perspective. The writings are set up as dialogues in the style of Plato. For St. Aelred, friendship involves love and commitment and is part and parcel of the Christian life. He believes that friends should be carefully selected and once selected, deserve the best that one can offer. In these relationships one not only finds God, but one is able to do effective work on behalf of God's people. Many commentators believe that St. Aelred was writing about the secrets of his success in the spiritual life in this work. Prior to entering religious life, Aelred was in the court of the Scottish king and was known for his political savvy and ability to accomplish things through his relationships with others. He used these same gifts in the monastery and accomplished a great deal in his lifetime, both in his abbey and for the Church as a whole.
Since Aelred speaks about friendship in poetic terms, and often times writes about friendship the way one would write about marriage, it is not surprising that his writings did spark controversy and for many years after Aelred's death, the work was largely unknown. Commentators believe that this is due not just to the controversy of the writings, but also to a combination of changes in religious life to a more aesthetic form as well as a fear of "particular friendships" (a Catholic euphemism for unhealthy, usually illicit sexual encounters). Whatever the actual reason, the book is a treasure today. In a time when people are looking for true intimacy and lasting relationships, this work gives readers much to think about. It also has great advice about personal and professional relationships. The book also offers the readers insight into a relationship with Jesus Christ. While the idea of the book may have come from Cicero, it is clear that St. Aelred's basis for the book came from his relationship with God and Cicero's writings provided fodder and a framework.

The great classic on spiritual friendship

Toss out your pop psychology driven books of the past century. Aelred of Rievaulx provides keen insight into the soul and into friendships between those who share the Spirit of Jesus Christ. A simple but profound read, the book does more than just talk about spiritual friendship, it is the very expression of its topic. Not a treatise where you, the reader, sit through a monologue, the book comes out of conversations with real spiritual friends of Aelred. Although the conversations are obviously reconstructed, there is a freshness in them with their expressions of anger, frustration, confusion, interest, and playfulness that makes the book a joy to read.

Exploring the depths of Friendship

This book was a nourishing and insightful read. Writing in the style of a Platonic dialog Aelred builds off of the insights of Cicero, the writings of the Church Fathers, his own experience of life in common as well as his experience of the depths of friendship in order to present this series of dialogs on the joys of friendship. He offers much wisdom for choosing and keeping friends. Much of what he has to say would fly in the face of today's outlook, but it certainly resonates with the desire of a soul to seek companionship and spiritual communion in the journey of life. This treasure trove of wisdom is certainly useful in coming to a deeper appreciation of the riches we have or should desire to have in our friends.

T. LINDSAY BAKER holds the W. K. Gordon Chair in Industrial History at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, and serves as the director of the W. K. Gordon Center for Industrial History at the Thurber ghost town near Mingus, Texas. Among other works, he is the author of Ghost Towns of Texas (University of Oklahoma Press, 1991) and More Ghost Towns of Texas (OUP, 2003), and he is coeditor of the WPA Oklahoma Slave Narratives (OUP, 1996).

The author should go through his manuscript and change "tales" to "tails." Every coin has a tail, but whether or not it has a tale depends on whose pockets or purses it has been in.

If a coin has come up heads for 100 times in a row, the author seems equivocal on whether to bet heads or tails for the next toss. I would bet heads on the likely chance that it is a two-headed coin. This would be a very unlikely event for a fair coin.

Since this book has been #1 on the best-seller list and may be so again. I thought it might be helpful to give an analysis of the pick-3 game that I think is especially simple and easy to understand. There are various bets for this game but I shall cover only the straight bet where you win only if you match the drawn number exactly and the box bet, where you can win even if your numbers come up in a different order.

Does a lottery bowl have a memory and does it try to compensate for past omissions? If not, then what numbers have come up in the past cannot influence what numbers will come up in the future. You decide!

Since each bowl contains 10 numbers, 0 through 9, there are 1,000 possible sets that can be drawn and the odds of a particular number being drawn are 1 in 1,000. A straight bet win generally pays $500 for a $1 ticket, so your expected (average) return on a straight bet is $500/1000 = $.50

For a box bet you win even if your numbers come up in a different order. There are two possible cases: your numbers are all different, or two of them are alike. If all three are alike such a number can be matched only by the exact same number, so it cannot be a box bet.

If your number has digits all different it can be matched by as many numbers as three digits can be arranged, which is 3 x 2 x 1 = 6. The odds, therefore, are decreased sixfold and become 6/1,000 = 1/166.66+ For this kind of match the typical prize is $80, so the expected value of a $1 ticket is $80/166.66+ = $0.48.

If your number has two digits alike they can be arranged in 3 ways: the odd one on the left, the odd one on the right, or the odd one in the middle. This reduces the odds by a factor of 3 to 3/1,000 or 1/333.33+ This bet typically pays $160, so the expected value of a $1 ticket is $160/333.33+ = $0.48. One type of bet appears to be as good as the other.

The conclusion is that if you play long enough you can expect to get back in prizes slightly less than half of what you pay for tickets. There are books that give recipes for playing lotteries, but do they do a bottom-line calculation of what your bet is worth? That is something you should look for.

Great Strategy

If you play the pick 3 lotto and are looking to increase your odds of winning then this book is for you. This book clearly explains this odds based system and instructs you on how to properly use it. This guide is well thought out and written in a way that anyone can understand. At 28 pages it is a pretty quick read but you'll want to reread parts just to familiarize yourself with the system. After reading this book you will understand the logic behind the system and be on track to winning. I definitely recommend checking this book out.

This book is thoughtful, written well and easy to understand. You don't have to be a scientist or use a computer. I just wish they'd expand it and put more strategies in it.

Easy to read

Easy to read, great for medical students on urology rotation. Has just enough detail to be interesting but not so much that your mind goes numb. It's 700 pages or so but it's easy to tear through this in one 4 week rotation; there are several chapters that just don't need to be read and there are sections that are obviously "skippable." I'd say about half the book is necessary high-yield info for the rotation; the rest is nice to know, not-so-high-yield topics. So it reads more like a 400 pages book.

The major downside to this book is the editing. I'm not sure who edited the book but there are typos all over the place and frequent contradictions throughout the book; sometimes a sentence will be contradicted by the one immediately following it! It's nothing too major, but when they mean to type HSV and they type HIV, that's a problem. Very different diseases!

Overall I'd still recommend this for a student who's strongly considering urology as a specialty. There's probably something shorter for those who just want to get through the rotation.

I got this book to read as a primer to Urology prior to reading the definitive (and significantly more detailed) text in the field, Campbell's.

It's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend.

David E. Shapiro has worked as an electrical contractor and consultant since 1980, and is IAEI- and state-certified as an inspector and plan reviewer. He has authored numerous articles on electrical work which have appeared in publications such as The Washington Post, Practical Homeowner, New England Builder, EC&M, and IEC Quarterly, and has a long-running column in Electrical Contractor magazine.

Worth every penny.

I have been a fan of this author from his articles in Electrical Contractor magazine, not just for his electrical knowledge, which is vast, but also because of the psychological descriptions he is able to provide with regard to customer relations, and the decisions required to complete the work given customer constraints, and how far into old work an electrician can reasonably expect to go. Chapter 2 alone is worth the price of the book, as it covers the hazards associated with old work, as well as the authors personal experience, and what effects this has had on his own health. I am an electrician as well, and highly recommend this book for electricians, even if they don't do much old work. It is full of useful information that can be readily applied on the job.

Not for laymen, but well written

The author clearly discloses that he is not addressing laypeople. (read the introduction) Given that disclosure, my expectations were unrealistic. I suspect that a real electrician would find this book illuminating. I had hoped to learn something useful about the electrical wiring in my 1959 house. Much of the jargon is over my head. The photographs are grayscale (b&w) rather than color. Some are downright fuzzy. Nearly all the photo illustrations were frustrating to my layman eyes. Looking at them, I can't determine what the author is trying to show.

On the upside, the first person writing is crisp and economical. I constantly read information technology books and articles as part of my education & profession. I wish those books could be written as clearly as this book. Many writers will take a firm stance on a topic so as to appear confident and authoritative. Mr. Shapiro equivocates from time to time, providing argument and counterargument on a particular decision point. He does so in a charming way that effectively gains the readers trust. It's refreshing to see an expert admit that technical decisions are not always black and white.

If you are more than an amateur electrician, I suspect that you will benefit from the technical expertise in this book and will enjoy the writing style.

Very glad I have this book!
By You must provide a name...
My motivation for buying this book was to prepare myself to hire a contractor to completely rewire our old house. After multiple additions over the years, the wiring has evolved into one big dangerous mess. It will be an expensive project so I planned to force myself to read this book. I expected it would be the mental equivalent of having multiple root canals. However, surprisingly, I really enjoyed it.

The author shares his knowledge in a very logical step-by-step process, he doesn't skip important details that left you wondering how he arrived at the final destination. He is the rare type of expert that can explain what he does, and why, in a very conversational and straightforward manner; in short, he knows how to communicate. This is probably because he has been an electrical contractor, an inspector, a consultant for legal proceedings involving electrical issues and an author of a magazine column on the subject. He can zoom from the forest level down to the trees (right to the bark!) and back out again and tie it all together.

However, be aware that he does not define the terms he uses and there is certainly a fair dose of jargon involved. I came to this book with just a rudimentary understanding of electricity and residential wiring but I found that sufficient. Also, the section on Carter Switching is truly punishing and, I think, can be just skimmed as the author says he hates to repair them and simply replaces them. But, if your electrical contractor tells you that you have a Carter System and it's going to X $$$ now you know why!
