Too short!
By Loves to listen, loves to read!
I did like this story. I especially liked catching up with the characters.. It has been 5 years ..in book years.. since Chloe and Sawyers's story and it was good to revisit them.. I like this series a lot and have been reading Jill Shalvis's early stuff as well.

Could have been so much more...

Novellas and short stories are always a risk but since I adore the Lucky Harbor series and have enjoyed short stories from Shalvis in the past I had high hopes for Under the Mistletoe. And while I did enjoy some parts of it and the story was complete it still left a good bit to be desired, in my opinion.

Part of the problem for me was that the story skips 5 years in the future when Ford and Tara's daughter, Mia, has gone away to college and found herself a man. Now, last we saw her she wasn't even legal (that I can remember) and I just couldn't get that out of my head. I kept seeing her as a 17 year old and, you know, that's got a real ick factor in some of the situations they get into. And with so few pages by the time I did get that out of my head it was, unfortunately, nearly over.

Now, putting aside the whole age thing, I did like Mia and Nick. They've got a little drama and hurt feelings going on, are sweet and sexy and your heart breaks for them a little when things go amiss. But really I wanted more for Mia. Not that I didn't like Nick, because I did. It just felt too soon for her story and I would have much preferred things being held off and getting a full length or at least a more fleshed out novella down the line. With both of them having complicated family lives growing up their story really could have been so much more developed and explored.

While Under the Mistletoe did provide a nice little taste of life in Lucky Harbor while we wait for the next novel and I did enjoy getting to see a little of the three original sisters and their men the story as a whole just didn't make it all the way into the "amazing" category that I expect from Shalvis now days.

I'd recommend this one more for the hardcore Lucky Harbor fans and not for those trying out Shalvis/the series for the first time. If you're interested in trying Shalvis out definitely start at the beginning of the series. All 6 books are just amazing and are some of my favorites!

It's Not Always the Guy's Fault
By Beverly Diehl
I'm a big fan of the Lucky Harbor series, and it was delightful to go back there for a Christmas Eve wedding in this short (80 pages) novella, BUT... the lead character annoyed me.

22 y.o. Mia and (24 y.o.?) Nick have been physically and emotionally involved for six months. Both have in common having been given up for adoption at birth, but Mia had the benefit of having a warm. loving adopted family, and THEN discovering an equally warm extended biological family in Lucky Harbor. Nick bounced around in a series of foster homes, so the idea of a big family gathering is something more triggering than enticing.

Despite knowing this about her boyfriend, Mia decides to spring on him, at the last minute, a ticket to go home with her for her aunt's wedding and the holidays. Nick freaks out and reacts badly. When he has a little time to digest it (overnight), he realizes how much Mia means to him; tries calling to tell her so, goes to her place at dawn, and then follows her to Lucky Harbor to win her back.

While it makes sense that Mia's people, from her family to her ex-boyfriend Carlos, will take her side and be protective of her, I wanted to shake her for her insensitivity to Nick. IMO, he was not the only one who needed to be making up for past mistakes; the whole fight/breakup occurred because Mia had expectations of how Nick "should" react, when she basically ambushed him. I felt disappointed all the compromises and emotional journeying seemed to be on Nick's side, rather than from Mia as well.

It speaks to this author's skill that I got as mad at this character as if she were a real person. Certainly with young love, we do have unreal expectations and heartburnings over small misunderstandings. The descriptions of Lucky Harbor are delightful, the Christmas wedding is sweet and funny. If you enjoy "visiting" Lucky Harbor, it's well worth reading this for a glimpse of your other favorite characters.
