Become Your Own Running Coach
By Earl Fee
This book by a world class athlete with over 40 world records is very easy to read due to the frequent headings, colour coding throughout, 50 action photos in colour, and the conversational, concise writing style.

Due to the great detail (e.g., comprehensive index, and over 300 expert references) in 440 pages and 22 chapters, it serves as an excellent reference book on running. However, half the chapters are applicable to athletes in general: e.g., large chapters on nutrition, mental training, injury prevention, weight training, stretching, inspiration etc. Hence it is a book on body, mind and spirit training.

The detailed material would be useful for coaches and trainers, and a range of runners from beginner to elite, and for young and old competitors.

It covers all important aspects of running training including detailed schedules for sprinters to marathoners,i.e., the five energy systems, the five training systems, recovery, etc.

After reading and understanding this book you become your own running coach and an athlete capable of excellence in performance.

The Greatest Instructional Book on Running I Have Ever Read
By Steve Nicholas
As someone who has mostly been a middle-of-the-pack runner, I have read quite a few books looking for ways to improve my running. Each has had its advantages, but this is one of the few that seems to bring everything together. It shows how to improve in every aspect of running, and it has inspired me to look at some of the areas that I hadn't thought of before in order to improve my running. Earl Fee is one of the greatest masters middle-distance runners to ever live, and he has shared a lot of gems with us. He has done a great service, and every runner who reads this book will benefit, especially those who need a broader perspective on their running than the miles on the pavement, the track, or the trail.

Excellent reference and guide
By A. J. Camillocci
I had started walking about a year prior to purchasing this book, as I wanted to move to jogging then running. Mr. Fee's writing style and detailed references provided me with the knowledge and ability to train for my first 5 K and to continue to improve my performance and time.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a program and to gain a better "all around" understanding of all the factors that come into play while training and eventually competing. The references throughout the book allow the reader to acquire more information on those topics important to the each person or circumstance.

"When do you go wheels up?" Ashley Sawyer asked as she walked down the street toward the local grocery store several blocks away.

"I'm impressed," her brother teased, the warm amusement in his voice coming clearly through the phone line. "You've been paying attention to the lingo."

"And you're avoiding the question." Tristan had been deploying with his team of U.S. Navy SEALs since she was sixteen. She knew that when he didn't answer a question, it was usually because he couldn't. Stepping onto the curb, she asked, "Well, you and Matt just take care of each other, okay?"

Silence hung on the line for so long that she checked her phone to make sure she hadn't dropped the call. "Tristan?"

"Matt's not going this time."

Her heart squeezed just a bit. She'd counted on Matt Waterstone, her brother's best friend since their first day in SEAL training, to watch out for Tristan. Matt had a habit of being in the right place at the right time, protecting Tristan from at least one bullet during their deployments. And that was just what he would actually own up to.

She swallowed an unexpected lump in her throat at the thought of harm coming to the man she'd had a crush on once upon a time. "What happened?"

"Nothing major. He'll heal up just fine with a little time. Hey, maybe I'll send him your way for a visit—keep him from getting bored here on his own."

Ashley chuckled as she stepped down from the curb to cross the street. "Right, I'm sure he'd have more fun in tiny little Charity Way, California, than in San Diego. Besides, I wouldn't have much time to entertain him. We just got a new guest at Lil's Place who needs somewhere to stay out of town. My next few days will be pretty full setting that up." Lil's Place had been housing battered women and their children for nearly ten years, and Ashley had served there for the past three. Within the past year she'd taken over as director of operations for the shelter. The new girl was her responsibility—along with all the other women and children at the shelter.

"Oh, Tristan, she's so young—maybe not even quite eighteen, and so petite. This guy must have been a monster, because she's bruised from her wrists all the way up to her elbows."

Her stomach swooped at just the thought of Joy, the young girl who had been dropped off the night before. If she had to guess, she'd say the girl was probably Korean, but Joy hadn't spoken more than a few words since arriving at Lil's, barely offering her name.

That was certainly understandable. It was hard to talk with anyone—let alone a stranger—after suffering at an abuser's hands. After all, Ashley hadn't spoken to anyone about it for months after the first time Paul hit her. Just the memory made her cheek sting, and she rubbed it absently as she entered the grocery store.

"Where'd she come from?" Tristan was always so straightforward. His question brought a wry grin to her lips.

Looking over her shoulder and around the end of the aisle to make sure she wouldn't be overheard in the store, Ashley whispered, "My friend Miranda dropped her off last night. She just said the girl needs to get out of town and asked if I knew of a place where she'd be safe."

A full-body shiver made her wrap her arms around her middle. She didn't like moving abuse victims out of Charity Way—leaving an abuser was traumatic enough without having to adjust to a new town—but in certain high-risk situations, it was necessary. Some abusive men went after their victims. Hadn't Paul come after her every time she broke things off? Every time she changed her phone number?

And Joy deserved to have a safe place to recover until she was ready to face her attacker.

Tristan let out a slow breath. "She's lucky to have you looking out for her. But don't forget to look out for yourself. You know what my rule number two is, right?"

"Don't fall out of the boat?"

He snorted. "Know your enemy. You've got to know who's been hurting this girl if your friend thinks there's a chance he'll come after her."

"And is rule number one as useful in this situation?"

"Don't get shot."

"All right. I won't. You don't either."

Having paid for a box of bandages and a compression wrap, Ashley exited the shop and started heading back home. As she crossed Main Street, she happened to glance to the side, directly into the reflection of the sun off of the windshield of a white sedan.

Suddenly its tires squealed against the pavement as the car barreled toward her, gaining speed with every inch.

Her mind froze, and her instincts took over as she fell backward. Her hip slammed into the sidewalk just as the car flew by and disappeared down another side street.

All her breath gone, she sat on the ground, part of her hoping that someone else had seen the car and maybe gotten a license plate number, the other part of her hoping that no one had witnessed her graceless fall. Gulping in as much air as possible, she lifted a scraped palm and studied it with a strange detachment. It didn't hurt.

Yet.

Her brother's voice rang out clearly, and Ashley snatched the phone that she'd dropped, the motion sending fire through her wrist. She brushed her jacket sleeves out of the way to get a better look at the scraped skin.

"Ash, answer me! Are you okay?" Tristan sounded worried, as if he'd called her name several times.

Ashley closed her eyes against the morning sun and the throbbing at her temples. "I think someone just tried to run me over." The absurdity of the thought brought a laugh bubbling from deep inside. That was ridiculous. The driver must not have noticed her. "What am I saying? Some driver just wasn't paying attention and nearly hit me."

"Are you okay?"

"Yes." She glanced around for the car as she pushed herself to her feet. It was long gone and the whole thing clearly a mistake. Right?

Another voice echoed behind Tristan's, and the phone crackled a few times as if he'd covered the receiver with his hand. "Listen, I have to go in a minute, but I love you. And I don't tell you this enough, but I'm really proud of you, kid. Be careful, okay?"

"I will."

Ashley ended the call and slipped the phone into her pocket. With the bag in her hand swinging at her side, Ashley hurried back to Lil's Place, so intent on finalizing the arrangements to move Joy to a long-term house several counties away that she nearly forgot to check the mailbox as she strolled up the driveway.

Leaning back, she slipped her hand into the mailbox, pulling out only one envelope. After flipping it over, she frowned. Both sides were blank. But the generic card inside contained more than enough to send her stomach through the cement and make her wonder if the near hit-and-run earlier had been more than an accident.

Just because I missed you today, doesn't mean you can keep my property.

Matt Waterstone lowered himself from his truck, landing on his good leg and resting the injured one without a wince as he glanced up and down Main Street of Charity Way. As nice as the town looked, it wasn't where he wanted to be. The rest of his team had gone wheels up on an op that he hadn't even been briefed about. Tristan, Will and Zach had laughed about the fun they'd have without the senior chief, like he was a stick-in-the-mud.

Man, he wished he was going with them.

But at least he might be useful here, despite his doctor's orders to stay in San Diego, his leg propped up on a pillow. Tristan had a gut feeling that Ashley was in trouble, and after that gut feeling had saved them both from a sniper a year before, who was Matt to argue? After almost ten years with SEAL Team FIFTEEN, he'd learned to rely on his training and instinct. And he trusted Tristan's gut more than his own.

The details were still a bit slim at this point—a near hit-and-run and a note from some deranged creep. Apparently Tristan had been on the phone with Ashley during the hit-and-run, and Mrs. Sawyer had called Tristan after Ashley told her about the note. It was enough to get Matt headed north.

"Just make sure that she's okay." Tristan had said, "Ash gets all kinds of calls and letters and snide remarks thanks to her work at the shelter. But no one's ever tried to run her over before. Just watch her back until they find this creep. Will you?"

Of course the answer was yes. His best friend's family was the closest thing Matt had to a family of his own.

"Excuse me." He approached a white-haired man writing the specials on a sidewalk chalkboard. "Could you point me in the direction of Lil's Place?" The man eyed him, as though questioning what business he could have there. "I'm a friend of Ashley Sawyer's."

Suddenly a small black coupe zipped down Main Street, screeching to a halt twenty yards to his right. Two women burst from within as if fireworks had been set off inside the car. They left the doors open; the petite blonde behind the wheel flew around the front of the car and hugged the other, a taller woman with dark hair.

"You'll be great, Carmen!" the blonde said, clutching the other's shoulders. "Now, go knock it out of the park."

"Thank you. Thank you for everything." Long curly hair flew behind her as Carmen ran to the door of the closest shop, offering the briefest of waves before disappearing inside.

Matt's gaze jumped back to the blonde. He caught the end of her wide smile, which sent his pulse skittering as if he'd just run five miles in the sand. The wind picked up a strand of her hair and the hem of her green skirt, but she wrestled them both back into place, never taking her eyes off the closed door.

She blinked long lashes, her smile settling...

Great Read!
By Melanie
A Promise to Protect was a great read! I liked it from the beginning and the book just kept continuing to get better as I read! I loved the characters - especially Matt, although Ashley and her brother Tristan were also favorites. I particularly liked how protective Tristan was and found myself chuckling a few times from things he did. ;)

The mystery was very good. I actually didn't guess who the culprit was and found myself surprised when it became known what was really going on. The romance was sweet and I liked how the book had an epilogue so it didn't seem like things were rushed.

After reading A Promise to Protect, I now plan on going back and reading some of Liz Johnson's previous books (especially The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn)... because if they are as good as this one, I know I'll like them. :)

I definitely recommend A Promise to Protect if you like suspenseful romance books - it's a great one.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Do YOU like hunky Navy Seals?
By Betsy Ann St. Amant
I do! ;)

Seriously though, Liz Johnson's newest Love Inspired Suspense, A PROMISE TO PROTECT, has a hunky Navy Seal AND so much more - relatable, three-dimensional characters you immediately connect with, a side of quirky, realistic side characters that move the story forward, an excellent suspenseful plot with surprises, and plenty of good ol' romance.

I personally loved how Liz incorporated the Navy Seal "lingo" so naturally into the story, but in a way us civilians could still understand. It really gave the book a unique and interesting edge and showed how much she did her research.

I'm a big fan of Liz and this story didn't disappoint! I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Christian Suspense Romance
By Anne Wilson
Ashley Sawyer runs a shelter to protect women; and it is because of her desire to reach out to others that she puts her own life in danger. It is no wonder then, why her brother asks his best friend, Navy SEAL, Matt Waterstone to keep an eye on his sister.

Ashley has not been used to having help and slowly comes to rely on Matt in a way that she has never done so before. Besides having to protect her from the unknown, Matt has another problem; he knows that Tristan will not take too kindly to him showing his sister any attention. With obstacles to cross, this story makes for a pleasurable read.

Besides having a story line that kept me wanting to read more, I also enjoyed seeing how Ashley and Matt had to deal with the law and support or rather lack of support that they seemed to receive as well as see how the law reacted to the undercover operation that was running in their city.

About the Author
Carol Marinelli recently filled in a form asking for her job title. Thrilled to be able to put down her answer, she put writer. Then it asked what Carol did for relaxation and she put down the truth - writing. The third question asked for her hobbies. Well, not wanting to look obsessed she crossed the fingers on her hand and answered swimming but, given that the chlorine in the pool does terrible things to her highlights – I’m sure you can guess the real answer.

She was better off without the job, Allegra told herself.

No one should have to put up with that.

Except that walking in the rain along grey London streets, taking the underground to various employment agencies, the anger that her boss could make such a blatant a pass at her and then fire her for not succumbing started to be replaced with something that felt close to fear.

She needed that job.

Needed it. Her savings had been obliterated by the bottomless pit that was her family's excess spending. At times it felt as if her lowly publishing wage supported half the Jackson family. Yes, she was the boring reliable one, but they didn't mind her dependability when their erratic ways found them in trouble. Just last week she had lent her stepmother, Chantelle, close to five thousand pounds in cash for credit card debts that her father didn't know about. It was laughable to think that she might now have to have her family support her.

It was a miserable day, with no sign that it was spring; instead it was cold and wet, and Allegra dug her hands deeper into her trench coat pockets, her fingers curling around a fifty-pound note she had pulled out of the ATM.

If her boss refused to put her pay in tomorrow it was all she had before being completely broke. No!

She'd been through worse than this, Allegra decided. As Bobby Jackson's daughter she was all too used to the bailiffs but her father always managed to pick himself up; he never let it get him down. She was not going to sink, but hell, if she did, then she'd sink in style!

Pushing open a bar door, she walked in with her head held high, the heat hitting her as she entered, and Allegra slipped off her coat and hung it, her hair dripping wet and cold down her back. Normally she wouldn't entertain entering some random bar, but still, at least it was warm and she could sit down and finally gather her thoughts.

There had been a confidence to her as she'd stalked out of her office with dignity. With her track record and her job history, a lot of the agencies had called over the years offering her freelance work.

It had been sobering indeed to find out that they were hiring no one, that the financial crisis and changes to the industry meant that there were no causal jobs waiting for her to step into.

None.

Well, a chance for a couple, but they added up to about three hours' work per month. Per month!

Allegra was about to head to the bar but, glancing around, saw that it was table service so she walked over to a small alcove and took a seat, the plush couch lined with velvet. Despite its rather dingy appearance from the street, inside it was actually very nice and the prices on the menu verified that as fact.

She looked up at the sound of laughter—a group of well-dressed women were sipping on cocktails and Allegra couldn't help but envy their buoyant mood. As her eyes moved away from the jovial women they stilled for a fraction, because there, sitting at a table near them, lost in his own world, was possibly the most beautiful man ever to come into her line of vision. Dark suited, his thick brown hair was raked back to show an immaculate profile, high cheekbones and a very straight nose; his long legs were stretched out and crossed at the ankle. But despite his rather languorous position, as he stared into his glass there was a pensiveness to him, a furrow between his eyebrows that showed he was deep in thought. The furrow deepened as there was another outbreak of laughter from the women's table, and just as he looked up, just as he might have caught her watching, Allegra was terribly grateful for the distraction of the waitress who approached.

'What can I get you?' Allegra was about to order a glass of house wine, or maybe just ask if they could do her a pot of tea and a sandwich, because she really ought to try a couple more job agencies, but hell, a girl could only take so much rejection in one day and she may well be living off tea and sandwiches for a long while yet!

'A bottle of Bollinger please.' It was an extravagant gesture for Allegra, an unusual one as well. She was extremely careful with her pay cheque, saving twenty percent to put towards her first mortgage before it even hit her account, determined never to be like her family—but where had that gotten her?

The waitress didn't bat an eye; instead she asked how many glasses.

'Just the one.'

She was given a little bowl of nuts too! 'Celebrating?' the waitress asked as she poured her drink.

'Sort of,' Allegra admitted, and then, left alone, she decided that she was. For months she had put up with her boss's thinly veiled leers and skin-crawling comments. It was worth celebrating just to finally be past all that, so she raised her glass to the window, in the general direction of her old work place.

'Cheers!'

As she turned she caught Mr. Gorgeous watching her—not staring, just idly curious—and she couldn't blame him for that. After all, she was raising a glass to the window. She gave him a brief smile and then turned back to her thoughts, took out a pen and the notebook and list of contacts that she always carried and set about making copious lists, determined, determined, that by the end of the week she would be back in work.

Halfway down the bottle and she didn't feel quite so brave. If anything, half a bottle of champagne on an empty stomach had her emotions bubbling and she was dangerously close to tears, especially when the waitress came over.

'You didn't sign the register when you came in,' the waitress said, and even before she continued Allegra knew what was coming and inwardly flinched as realization dawned. 'You are a member, aren't you?' She felt a blush spread on her cheeks. Of course it was a private club that she'd entered, not some bar she'd just wandered into, and just as she was about to apologise and fling down her fifty-pound note and flee, a voice that was as pleasing as its owner saved her the embarrassment.

'Why are you hiding there?' A deep warm voice had both Allegra and the waitress turn around and she found herself looking now into the eyes of the pensive stranger—very brown eyes that stayed steady as hers blinked in confusion. He turned and addressed the waitress. 'Sorry, she's my guest. I'll sign her in in a moment.' The waitress opened her mouth to say something—after all, Allegra had been sitting there alone for a good half an hour or so and he had made no effort to join his guest—but perhaps he was a favourite customer, or maybe it was just his impressive stance, because, without comment, the waitress left them to it.

'Thanks,' Allegra said as he took a seat in front of her. 'But no thanks. I'll just settle my bill… .' She went to go, but as he moved to stop her, his hand reaching across the table, she shot him a look that told him unwelcome contact would be a very foolish mistake on his part. Given the day she'd had, Allegra had enough pent-up energy to give this stranger a little piece of her mind.

'As I said, thank you, but no thank you.'

'At least finish your drink,' said the stranger. 'It would be a shame to waste it.'

It would be a crying shame actually.

Maybe she could take it with her, Allegra thought wildly, having visions of herself walking down the street, half-drunk bottle in hand, bemoaning her situation. She found herself smiling at the very thought—not smiling at him, of course, except he interpreted it as such, because he clicked slender fingers in the direction of the bar and summoned another glass. Allegra sat bristling as the waitress poured him a glass of her champagne.

'I'm just trying to enjoy a quiet drink alone,' she said pointedly.

'Then sign in,' he suggested.

'Ha, ha!'

'Or,' he offered, 'you can be my guest, which means you sit with me. I wouldn't hear of it otherwise.' She couldn't place his accent. He spoke English terribly well; in fact, his voice was clipped and well schooled, unlike Allegra's rather more London accent, but there was a slight ring to it, Spanish or Italian perhaps. She was determined not to stay long enough to find out.

'Anyway,' he carried on despite her lack of response, 'you don't look as if you are enjoying it. In fact, apart from the small salute to the window you seem as miserable as I am.' She looked at him and saw that the impressive suit he was wearing wasn't just dark, it was black, and so, too, the tie. Not just from the attire, but from the strain on his face, he had clearly come from a funeral. Now he was close, she could smell him—and he smelt nothing like the usual man in a bar. It wasn't just the delicious hint of cologne that was unusual; he actually smelt of clean—there was no other way to describe it. His eyes were clear and bizarrely she felt herself relax just a little, for this was surely not a man who usually pressed attention, and it wasn't as if she had anywhere else that she needed to be.

'Are you usually so invasive?'

He thought about it for a moment. 'No.' He took a sip of drink and seemed to think about it some more. 'Never. I just saw you looking so fed up and then when the waitress came over I thought.'

'That you'd cheer me up?'

'No.' He gave a small shrug. 'I thought we could be miserable together. Don't look, but there are a group of women…' He gestured his head and as instructed she didn't look, but she knew who he meant. She'd heard their flirting laughter, and had easily guessed it was aimed towards him. 'One of them in particular seems determined to join me.'

'I'd have thought you'd have no trouble at all fighting off unwelcome attention.' Unlike me, she didn't add, but then she wasn't particularly used to men vying for her attention—well, not gorgeous ones anyway. But knowing how...

Why was this a Harlequin Recommended Read?
By It's
The review that stated there was no romance was correct. The first couple chapters started out interesting that a prince makes a deal with a woman he meets in a bar to set up a false engagement so he would be able to get out of his arranged marriage that was due to happen soon. However it backfires and she's expected to just go through a royal wedding without having any say so. She had no backbone whatsoever and was just ditched at the palace most of the time. They had one encounter I thought the book might turn around when paparazzi were onto them, but it was just a chaste kiss for the cameras. Meanwhile she's hating her life being separated from her friends and family most of the time and then being told she's not good enough and needs to change her hair, voice, walk, etc. They spend no moments together but at night they share a room & he's on the couch and after all of this I didn't care if they ever got together. I was rooting for the girl to stand her ground and walk out! This was a book with a case of Stockholm Syndrome rather than romance. The lead was an insensitive jerk who didn't earn nor deserved her love at the end. I won't be reading another by this author again, sorry.

Playing the royal game
By Clare O'Beara
A modern Cinderella tale complete with paparazzi and talent shows; meet a royal family that needs to get with the times. Allegra Jackson is fired from her publishing job in London for not returning the boss's advances. She meets a handsome man while drinking defiant champagne. He's a financier, but after some conversation he reveals that he is Alex, Crown Prince of a Mediterranean island called Santina, and he has been betrothed to a women he does not love, and is trying to think of a way out of it.

Allegra, slightly giddy from the bubbly, agrees to pretend she and the prince have fallen in love and wish to marry. Her wildly unsuitable family will shock his parents and public, and Alex will be urged not to marry for some time. Initially Allegra accepts a hefty cheque and ring to play along, but she is assured that there will be no sleeping together. The press are all over the story, and Allegra's family are invited to Santina. Here, her endearing football star dad gets tipsy and makes an impromptu speech, as he would at home, and her talent show winning sister sings just as if it was a karaoke night. Shock ensues but guess what, the public love the Jacksons. Allegra's determination to see the island leads her to elude her driver and shop and drink coffee, and far from being in danger she is respectfully loved by the islanders, who seldom see their queen. The frosty royals are against such loose behaviour. Meanwhile the couple at the centre of the situation, forced into close proximity, predictably discover an unforeseen attraction - if only they were not so resolute not to wed!

Carol Marinelli has obviously mixed and matched from genuine royal goings-on, and she spares us too many cliches in order to get with the real people. I liked it a lot more than I'd expected and while I was hoping for more detail about what the rulers actually do on Santina, there is ample location description to make it feel a long way from home for the Londoner.

No romance. 1st Chapter okay
By ReadytoRead
After the first chapter, the book just fell apart. I am not sure how the book got to the end where the characters were in love with each other. I figured with about five more chapters, the characters may begin to like each other; and then five additional chapters after that, they would show the obligatory love for each other. This is just how far off this book was. There was no romance and not even "like" between the characters, let alone love.

There were a host of characters (and couples) in the book. With just a few lines, each of these other characters showed more love toward each other (or at least had it indicated through the writing). It is really bad when you are more interested in the sub plots or the other characters.

And then, you would think in an epilogue, the clean up would be done and the love would show. Well, it didn't, but we did get more info about the other couples, whoo hoo.

...and I felt really bad for the lady, it was like the tone of the book just kind of beat the woman down and didn't want her to shine at all

Not a romance in my book...

Review: Tethered-4.5 stars, A
By Jen Twimom
My Rating: 4.5 stars: Loved it - enthusiastically recommend (A)
Originally Posted at That's What I'm Talking About

Tethered is a wonderful novella set in Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series set sometime after the second book, Heart of Steel. Although this story can be read stand alone, it does build upon the events in the second book, and therefore, contains some spoilers from Heart of Steel. Also, I feel those that have read the series will have more emotional investment in the characters.

The story opens with hilarious letters sent between our hero, Archimedes Fox and his sister, Zenobia. Their correspondences set the mood for the story, and although there are extremely serious moments during the book, the letters serve as a reminder that the characters know how to laugh at themselves and enjoy life.

An old associate of Archimedes shows up on board the Lady Nergüi, and soon Fox and Yasmeen find themselves on a rescue mission for which they did not willingly volunteer. But no matter the circumstances, Archimedes and Yasmeen seem to always be on step ahead of the nefarious Miles Bilson.

I adore how much Archimedes loves Yasmeen. Knowing she is carries much sorrow from the loss of her previous airship and its crew, he finds a way to help her deal with the painful memories without compromising the woman she is. The fact that he danced for her, joked and played, then finally loved her so that good memories would replace the bad is so wonderful.

Throughout the entire story, the interaction and play of emotions between Archimedes and Yasmeen is amazing. Ms. Brook has a gift for putting heart and soul into words, allowing an array of emotion and sentiment to leap off the pages. The pair are playful with their words and actions. They accept the other for who they are and accommodate differences out of love. Whether through quiet introspection and subsequent actions or passionate outbursts, the pair can communicate at a level that would make real life couples envious. I adore how much they love one another.

Although there are a few known players in this book, Ms. Brook creates a handful of colorful characters unique to Tethered. She gives each character enough background and page time to provide this novella with the richness of a full-length story. And our villain, Bilson, is desperate and cruel with the shine of a new penny. I wanted to strangle him more than once.

In conclusion, Tethered is an excellent story and perfect sample of Ms. Brook's storytelling talent in the steampunk romance genre. The depth and range of the plot, characters, and actions are on par with that of a full-length novel. The plot twists are exciting; they never feel contrived, and the story flowed well. The action and adventure kept me on the edge of my seat, but it's the characters and their stories that give this story and series real heart.

Fans of Heart of Steel do not want to miss this continuation of Archimedes' and Yasmeen's stories!
By Alexandra
Tethered is a combination extended epilogue/after the happily ever after of Heart of Steel. It reads very well as a stand-alone novella, but obviously this book and review contains spoilers for Heart of Steel - so don't read further if you want to read Heart of Steel first.

Archimedes Fox and Yasmeen Corsair are my favorite characters in the Iron Seas universe, and probably my very favorite thing about any of these books are Archimedes' letters to his sister, Zenobia, of which there are plenty here. These letters are always vastly entertaining, but this time they serve a new purpose: an entreaty for help. After selling the Leonardo da Vinci sketch for an astronomical amount Archimedes and Yasmeen are independently wealthy which makes them very able to pay a ransom (kidnapping and ransom is so common in the Iron Seas world that there's an unspoken and unbroken conduct for how they should be handled).

When Zenobia is taken hostage it should be a simple matter of paying the fee and everyone going on their merry way. Unfortunately Zenobia has been taken by an old business associate of Archimedes, and he wants Yasmeen to fly her ship to the floating city of New Eden to free his brother. Unfortunately New Eden is run by a zealot and all ships and people brought into the city never get to leave. This leaves Archimedes and Yasmeen in a tight spot.

This is a great look into Archimedes and Yasmeen's lives together, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship get tested. When Meljean first mentioned the city of New Eden back in The Iron Duke I was more than intrigued and delighted that we got to visit it here (even if that visit was fraught with peril). Tethered is not-to-be missed by fans of Heart of Steel. I only gave it three stars because I did think it had some relationship reflections on Yasmeen's behalf that would have belonged better in Heart of Steel. I also thought the height of the action was resolved a tiny bit too easily and quickly for me. Despite all that I did enjoy this book, and am happy to have it in my collection!

Could not love this series more!
By AvidReader
I have absolutely loved Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series. I am not a big fan of Steampunk. I have a hard time with the idea that society has technologically advanced so there are airships and robotic body parts, and yet in some books women are still wearing ridiculous dresses that impair their ability to move around. But, I really liked Brook's Guardian series so I thought I would give the Iron Seas a try and it has been completely worth it. Brook's characters are so smartly written, her dialogue is just right, her books include lightheartedness (Mr. Longcock?) and yet she tackles really serious issues.

This novella catches up with Yasmeen and Archimedes. Yasmeen is an airship captain and Archimedes is an adventurer and salvager of lost treasures. They got together in Heart of Steel, and are now aboard Yasmeen's new airship flying around doing mercenary jobs as Archimedes plots his next salvage mission. They are blackmailed into seeking out New Eden, a floating utopia that conscripts the unwilling and from which almost no one has ever escaped. They have back up plans that almost work out, but end up being taken to New Eden anyway. No spoilers but, psst, it all turns out ok.

Yasmeen and Archimedes are a nearly perfect couple to me. I love that in their romance they are devoted to each other and yet are so clearly equals. The romance was a tough sell for Yasmeen in some ways because in her position as captain she has to be in charge of the crew and she can't be seen as deferring to Archimedes or she will lose control of her ship. The two of them strike a lovely balance, largely because Archimedes doesn't need to control her or best her or be in charge of her, he just wants to be with her. He's an alpha for sure - all adventure and excitement and hotness - and yet not a jerk. He can say "Mine" to Yasmeen without needing to get her to submit to his will, which frees her to give herself to him. And I love how totally entranced Archimedes is with Yasmeen, just as she really is with difficult parts and all. And the same is true for how she feels about him. In some ways, I think that Yasmeen and Archimedes are a very modern couple, both successful in their spheres and using their skills to enhance each other and not compete against each other. And together they generate serious heat. Brook's sex scenes with Yasmeen and Archimedes are hot without being overblown or ridiculous, as such scenes sometimes are.

This is also the first time we've really experienced someone under the effect of the Tower signals. In the past Brook has described what it was like generally, and in some previous books a Horde device has frozen characters so they can't move at all, which is terrifying to imagine. But this time we actually get to witness what Archimedes is like when under the influence of the device, the lack of emotion and woodenness, being stripped of his will and really the things that make him himself. It is a futuristic concept well played out in this book.

Sometimes novellas feel too short and authors don't have time to deal with all aspects of a story the way they should, so they do a lot of quick fill in to bring you where you need to be or you feel as though the novella skips over things too quickly. Not true in this case. This book had the feel of a full length novel and I didn't feel as though there were gaps.

I probably wouldn't recommend this as a stand-alone if you haven't read any of the Iron Seas books. I'd just suggest starting at the beginning and work your way through.
