Review: Tethered-4.5 stars, A
By Jen Twimom
My Rating: 4.5 stars: Loved it - enthusiastically recommend (A)

Tethered is a wonderful novella set in Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series set sometime after the second book, Heart of Steel. Although this story can be read stand alone, it does build upon the events in the second book, and therefore, contains some spoilers from Heart of Steel. Also, I feel those that have read the series will have more emotional investment in the characters.

The story opens with hilarious letters sent between our hero, Archimedes Fox and his sister, Zenobia. Their correspondences set the mood for the story, and although there are extremely serious moments during the book, the letters serve as a reminder that the characters know how to laugh at themselves and enjoy life.

An old associate of Archimedes shows up on board the Lady Nergüi, and soon Fox and Yasmeen find themselves on a rescue mission for which they did not willingly volunteer. But no matter the circumstances, Archimedes and Yasmeen seem to always be on step ahead of the nefarious Miles Bilson.

I adore how much Archimedes loves Yasmeen. Knowing she is carries much sorrow from the loss of her previous airship and its crew, he finds a way to help her deal with the painful memories without compromising the woman she is. The fact that he danced for her, joked and played, then finally loved her so that good memories would replace the bad is so wonderful.

Throughout the entire story, the interaction and play of emotions between Archimedes and Yasmeen is amazing. Ms. Brook has a gift for putting heart and soul into words, allowing an array of emotion and sentiment to leap off the pages. The pair are playful with their words and actions. They accept the other for who they are and accommodate differences out of love. Whether through quiet introspection and subsequent actions or passionate outbursts, the pair can communicate at a level that would make real life couples envious. I adore how much they love one another.

Although there are a few known players in this book, Ms. Brook creates a handful of colorful characters unique to Tethered. She gives each character enough background and page time to provide this novella with the richness of a full-length story. And our villain, Bilson, is desperate and cruel with the shine of a new penny. I wanted to strangle him more than once.

In conclusion, Tethered is an excellent story and perfect sample of Ms. Brook's storytelling talent in the steampunk romance genre. The depth and range of the plot, characters, and actions are on par with that of a full-length novel. The plot twists are exciting; they never feel contrived, and the story flowed well. The action and adventure kept me on the edge of my seat, but it's the characters and their stories that give this story and series real heart.

Fans of Heart of Steel do not want to miss this continuation of Archimedes' and Yasmeen's stories!

Tethered is a combination extended epilogue/after the happily ever after of Heart of Steel. It reads very well as a stand-alone novella, but obviously this book and review contains spoilers for Heart of Steel - so don't read further if you want to read Heart of Steel first.

Archimedes Fox and Yasmeen Corsair are my favorite characters in the Iron Seas universe, and probably my very favorite thing about any of these books are Archimedes' letters to his sister, Zenobia, of which there are plenty here. These letters are always vastly entertaining, but this time they serve a new purpose: an entreaty for help. After selling the Leonardo da Vinci sketch for an astronomical amount Archimedes and Yasmeen are independently wealthy which makes them very able to pay a ransom (kidnapping and ransom is so common in the Iron Seas world that there's an unspoken and unbroken conduct for how they should be handled).

When Zenobia is taken hostage it should be a simple matter of paying the fee and everyone going on their merry way. Unfortunately Zenobia has been taken by an old business associate of Archimedes, and he wants Yasmeen to fly her ship to the floating city of New Eden to free his brother. Unfortunately New Eden is run by a zealot and all ships and people brought into the city never get to leave. This leaves Archimedes and Yasmeen in a tight spot.

This is a great look into Archimedes and Yasmeen's lives together, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship get tested. When Meljean first mentioned the city of New Eden back in The Iron Duke I was more than intrigued and delighted that we got to visit it here (even if that visit was fraught with peril). Tethered is not-to-be missed by fans of Heart of Steel. I only gave it three stars because I did think it had some relationship reflections on Yasmeen's behalf that would have belonged better in Heart of Steel. I also thought the height of the action was resolved a tiny bit too easily and quickly for me. Despite all that I did enjoy this book, and am happy to have it in my collection!

Could not love this series more!
By AvidReader
I have absolutely loved Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series. I am not a big fan of Steampunk. I have a hard time with the idea that society has technologically advanced so there are airships and robotic body parts, and yet in some books women are still wearing ridiculous dresses that impair their ability to move around. But, I really liked Brook's Guardian series so I thought I would give the Iron Seas a try and it has been completely worth it. Brook's characters are so smartly written, her dialogue is just right, her books include lightheartedness (Mr. Longcock?) and yet she tackles really serious issues.

This novella catches up with Yasmeen and Archimedes. Yasmeen is an airship captain and Archimedes is an adventurer and salvager of lost treasures. They got together in Heart of Steel, and are now aboard Yasmeen's new airship flying around doing mercenary jobs as Archimedes plots his next salvage mission. They are blackmailed into seeking out New Eden, a floating utopia that conscripts the unwilling and from which almost no one has ever escaped. They have back up plans that almost work out, but end up being taken to New Eden anyway. No spoilers but, psst, it all turns out ok.

Yasmeen and Archimedes are a nearly perfect couple to me. I love that in their romance they are devoted to each other and yet are so clearly equals. The romance was a tough sell for Yasmeen in some ways because in her position as captain she has to be in charge of the crew and she can't be seen as deferring to Archimedes or she will lose control of her ship. The two of them strike a lovely balance, largely because Archimedes doesn't need to control her or best her or be in charge of her, he just wants to be with her. He's an alpha for sure - all adventure and excitement and hotness - and yet not a jerk. He can say "Mine" to Yasmeen without needing to get her to submit to his will, which frees her to give herself to him. And I love how totally entranced Archimedes is with Yasmeen, just as she really is with difficult parts and all. And the same is true for how she feels about him. In some ways, I think that Yasmeen and Archimedes are a very modern couple, both successful in their spheres and using their skills to enhance each other and not compete against each other. And together they generate serious heat. Brook's sex scenes with Yasmeen and Archimedes are hot without being overblown or ridiculous, as such scenes sometimes are.

This is also the first time we've really experienced someone under the effect of the Tower signals. In the past Brook has described what it was like generally, and in some previous books a Horde device has frozen characters so they can't move at all, which is terrifying to imagine. But this time we actually get to witness what Archimedes is like when under the influence of the device, the lack of emotion and woodenness, being stripped of his will and really the things that make him himself. It is a futuristic concept well played out in this book.

Sometimes novellas feel too short and authors don't have time to deal with all aspects of a story the way they should, so they do a lot of quick fill in to bring you where you need to be or you feel as though the novella skips over things too quickly. Not true in this case. This book had the feel of a full length novel and I didn't feel as though there were gaps.

I probably wouldn't recommend this as a stand-alone if you haven't read any of the Iron Seas books. I'd just suggest starting at the beginning and work your way through.
