The brisk December air smelled like snow. None was forecasted for the next few days, but when it started getting dark this time of year, the Montana temperature invariably dropped.

Jesse McAllister pulled up the collar of his leather bomber jacket, hunched his shoulders against the cold and finished fueling his truck. This week he was using Leo's gas station, which was situated at the edge of town. Next time he'd fill up at Earl's, Blackfoot Falls's only other station, five blocks north on the other end of Main Street. Jesse had gone to school with both men's sons so he was careful to spread the business.

The multicolored Christmas lights twisting around the flagpole and arching over the tiny town square blinked on just as Jesse climbed behind the wheel. He smiled when the giant elm tree lit up and knew that it was Miriam Lemmon who'd flipped the switch. Tomorrow evening it would be Mabel's turn. The elderly twins had been in charge of seasonal decorations since before Jesse was born.

The familiarity should have been comforting. But in the year and a half since he'd returned home, there'd been no solace. His family's fourth-generation ranch was struggling. It didn't matter that the poor economy was affecting everyone.

Hell, he'd crossed an ocean to fight for his country, learned how to fly everything from large planes to small helicopters, and yet there wasn't a damn thing he could do to pull the ranch out of the red.

He'd been eager to come home after his air-force duty, but since then it seemed he'd been nothing but dead weight. Sucking in oxygen yet contributing nothing.

Winter made everything worse. During the spring and summer months, with the calving and roundups and irrigation constantly going haywire, there didn't seem to be enough hours in the day. But since the final cut of hay, work was sparse and they had a bunkhouse full of hands who needed steady paychecks. Like Cole and Trace, Jesse still pitched in, made himself useful the best way he knew how. But his brothers, they belonged here, not him.

Not feeling like heading back to the Sundance just yet, he decided to cruise down Main Street to see if Noah was in his office. Even three blocks away, Jesse could see the sheriff's truck parked at the curb. That didn't necessarily mean anything. Noah could've walked home or over to Marge's diner for supper.

Jesse drove past the Cut and Curl, where his mother always got her hair done, past the hardware store, Ernie's barber shop and the fabric store. He slowed to a crawl when he got to the second residential side street and peered at the third house down. No lights on, so Noah wasn't home. The county provided the small two-bedroom house for him as part of the sheriff's compensation. But mostly he spent his free time out at the Sundance, just as he had when they were teenagers.

Noah had always been part of the family, and sometimes it was easier for Jesse to talk to him rather than Cole. Even though Jesse was only a year younger, his brother had been the one to fill their father's shoes when he'd died of cancer while Jesse was still in college. It was a McAllister tradition—the reins were handed to the oldest son…as they should be.

Jesse drove past the Watering Hole, where the usual Friday-evening crowd hung out after they'd cashed their checks. Then he saw Noah through the open blinds of the sheriff's office. Roy, one of the deputies, was on his way out the door, so Jesse parked his truck at the curb.

By the time he went inside, Noah was standing at the window, looking out and frowning. "Where's your Jeep?"

"Traded it in." Jesse went straight to the half-filled coffeepot. The brew was dark, which meant Noah had made it. Reminded Jesse of some of the joe he'd stomached in Afghanistan. So strong you could use it for diesel. "This stuff fresh?"

Noah nodded. "Why did you do that? You loved that Jeep."

Jesse hunted in the upper oak cabinet for a clean mug, found one and sniffed it for good measure. "It wasn't practical."

"Yeah, because you guys don't have enough pickups at the Sundance."

Jesse shrugged. "I got a good deal on the Dodge," he said. "It's secondhand but has only forty-two thousand miles."

Noah eyed him thoughtfully, likely wondering what had brought on Jesse's change of heart. He'd wanted a Jeep since before he'd learned to drive. The first thing he'd done after returning from Afghanistan was find a dealership and drive the latest model off the lot. It wasn't until later, when he'd seen the disrepair of the ranch, that he'd realized what a selfish bastard he'd been.

But that probably wasn't the only thing Noah was wondering about. Jesse wasn't himself and everyone, including Noah, thought the war had changed him. Jesse knew the war had nothing to do with his restlessness.

Sure, he'd seen things no human being should have to witness. War was never pretty. And yeah, even though he'd been a tanker pilot and not one of the fighter jocks, he'd flown some damn hairy missions, but he hadn't experienced anything like the men with boots on the ground. As far as deployments went, he'd had it fairly easy.

No, his problem was pretty basic. After living in Montana most of his life, being completely sure that his duty and his destiny were bound up in the Sundance, he didn't belong here anymore. Ironic that it had about killed him to give the military all those years in exchange for teaching him how to fly. He'd even chosen a college close enough that he could come home most weekends. And now…each day his sense of belonging seemed to fade even more.

"Weren't you supposed to fly to Billings to pick up a pair of pit bulls?" Noah finally said, while he topped up his coffee.

"The neighbor of the woman who runs the center there adopted them."

"That was lucky."

"Yeah, people are too biased against pit bulls. They're good dogs as long as they're raised right." Jesse sipped his coffee and stared idly out the window, suddenly feeling foolish that he'd stopped by. It wasn't as if he needed advice. He knew what he had to do. Volunteering for animal search-and-res-cue had taken the edge off his discontent but it wasn't helping his family.

"Sit down." Noah indicated the sorry black vinyl-and-chrome chair, then sat behind his desk. "What are you doing in town, anyway?"

"I had to pick up some fencing wire and fuel the truck."

"It's quiet around here without Sundance guests coming and going. Rachel take any reservations for January?"

Jesse sighed. The family had agreed they'd close the dude ranch for the holidays, but his sister was a pushover. "She's got a woman coming in next weekend."

"A week before Christmas?" Noah frowned over the rim of his mug. "I thought she'd shut down for the month of December."

"She's making an exception. The woman is volunteering over at Safe Haven and was desperate for a place to stay." Jesse shrugged. "You know Rachel. Couldn't say no. You still going to New York to see Alana?"

Noah grinned like a ten-year-old with a new puppy. "I leave next Thursday. My sisters are coming with their families to spend Christmas with the folks."

Jesse managed a smile. Not that he wasn't happy for his friend. It was the holidays he was dreading. He hadn't heard anything about the annual open house his mother usually hosted, but he knew it had to be on the calendar. Even if they did have to shell out a few bucks for the food and beer, no one would deny her the McAllister tradition.

"Which airport you flying out of?" Jesse asked.

"Billings. Anything closer was either booked or involved too many layovers."

"Need a ride?"

Noah's brows furrowed with curiosity. "I thought you'd be looking forward to spending the time with the family. This is what…only the second holiday you've been home?"

"Jesus, it's just a ride."

Noah leaned back, a self-deprecating smile pulling at his mouth. "Thanks, I'm taking my truck." He took another sip, his probing eyes staying on Jesse. "How've you been, buddy?"

"You know.. " He shrugged. "Good. I've been doing a lot of flying for different shelters." Nothing new, and not what his friend was asking. Jesse let out a gushing breath. "I'm thinking about reenlisting."

Noah's mouth opened, and he quickly set down his mug. "You gotta be kidding. Shit," he said when he clearly realized that Jesse was dead serious. "What do Cole and the rest of the family say about it?"

"They don't know." Jesse looked him square in the eye. "This stays between you and me."

"Why reenlist?" Noah shook his head. "You hated being away from Montana."

"I'm no good here. At least with an officer's salary I can send home money, plus the bonus I'll get for committing to another ten years."

Noah frowned, looking so troubled Jesse was sorry as hell he'd opened his mouth. "You talked to someone from the air force about this already?"

"Just enough to know what's what."

"Big mistake, buddy. Especially if it's just about the money. You'll break your mother's heart."

Jesse stared into his cold coffee. "Yeah, well, I gotta do what's best for everyone."

Noah muttered a curse. "If you think tearing yourself away from the ranch and your family to make a buck is the right thing, you've got a hell of a lot more thinking to do."

Wasn't that the problem? The more thinking Jesse did, the more lost he felt.

Shea Monroe stared out the large plate-glass window of her San Jose office, the phone pressed to her ear as she listened to her mother complain about her new stepchildren. The older one...

A tale from Blackfoot Falls, Montana. Jesse McAllister of the Sundance ranch is facing into the red and considers re-enlisting as a pilot, to earn better money and to escape his empty personal life. But ON A SNOWY CHRISTMAS NIGHT there might a be a reason to change his mind.

Shea Monroe is a computer software engineer working from San Jose, who decides to avoid family strife by not going home for Christmas and volunteers to help at a large animal shelter in Montana. The Sundance is partly a dude ranch and while they do not board dudes over Christmas they are glad to give a room to a volunteer. Shea is nervous and is almost overwhelmed when she is introduced to the boisterous ranch family over dinner. Next day Jesse takes her out on a trail ride in the beautiful snow-covered mountains and they manage to find common ground.

Shea assists with caring for the animals at the shelter - goats, bison and two hundred horses included. The feed and hay required is staggering. When a roan colt escapes his stable and vanishes into the snow, she unwisely sets out after him. Jesse, making a flight in a Cessna, spots Shea as a blizzard is about to descend and lands, taking the girl to shelter in a nearby cabin. Snowed in, the pair get to know each other (bit of a cliché) and while Jesse promises to be a gentleman, the intimacy of their surroundings encourages confidence and Shea feels as much desire for the rancher as he does for her.

Debbi Rawlins previously wrote Own The Night and relishes throwing city girls into ranching country settings, way out of their depth. Luckily for them, her heroes see past the cheap thrills offered by many tourist girls but can recognise a diamond when they see one. Shea and Jesse, are well written and endearing, roundly developed, with a common cause in the assistance of abandoned large animals. The setting is also very well described. The more I read by Debbi Rawlins, the more I like her. A follow-up to this book focuses on Annie at the sanctuary, 'No-One has to Know'.

Beautiful, sexy love story about two people trying to find themselves and accidentally finding each other. Finding the missing pieces of themselves in each other is the last thing they expected to happen.

About the Author

Bronislaw Malinowski (1884-1942), author of Argnonauts of the Western Pacific (1922) is still regarded as a pioneer anthropologist. Lecturing in both the UK and USA before and after the outbreak of the Second World War, he established himself as one of the most important anthropologists of the twentieth century.

A classic

This is a real classic in the history of anthropology, published in 1922, and unlike another classic from the same decade, Coming of Age in Samoa, it has worn well, too. This is where modern ethnography begins. Malinowski tells us how to do ethnography, in no uncertain terms, as he explains Trobriand kula expeditions. I found it to be a delightful read and I was continually amazed at the intellectual sophistication of his work, given its age. I believe I learned more about ethnography from this book than from any other I have ever read, and I have been a professional anthropologist for 30 years. It is, I must warn you, a long book, and I doubt that many will be willing to read it from stem to stern, but I think every anthropologist should study the introduction at least. It is perhaps the "sacred charter" for the ethnographic project, complete with felicitous phrases such as the "ethnographer's magic," "the imponderabilia of actual life," "the native's point of view," and "the hold life has." In addition, it is certainly essential reading for anyone interested in magic, because it is as much about magic as it is about kula exchange.
I assigned this book to a junior-level college class in ethnography, but they weren't as pleased with it as I was. Many of the students understood the importance of the book, but most also found it tedious, dull, repetitive, hard to follow, and definitely too long.

Malinowski's book is clearly written, in great detail of his experiences on the Trobriand Islands as an ethnographer. He introduces the reader into an explanation of how he is going to go about his findings, through experiments and observations of the growing cultures on the Trobriand Islands, which are located off the southern coast of New Guinea. The ethnographer begins by asking the reader to imagine himself as a "beginner," with no direction or help on where to begin his journey. He is trying express what it was like for him during the beginning of his journey on the islands. However, Malinowski explains how overtime he becomes more comfortable with his surroundings, which enables him to further his findings.
Malinowski's book is based mainly on his discoveries of the traditions of the Trobriand culture. He goes into detail of his observations of the Kula, who are the Trobriand natives. He recognizes their importance of exchanging valuables, or vaygu'a, through the male partners. In their culture, the two types of valuables of armshells and necklaces must be exchanged against each other for the main purpose of circulating around the Kula ring with the importance of relationship. Although, as Malinowski explains, it is not so simple, rather it is a very complex ritual. He states,
The Kula is "a big, inter-tribal relationship, uniting with definite social bonds a vast area and great numbers of people, binding them with definite ties of reciprocal obligations, making them follow minute rules and observations in a concerted manner - the Kula is a sociological mechanism of surpassing size and complexity, considering the level of culture on which we find it." (510)
Throughout Malinowski's book, he does a well job emphasizing cultural particularism through his studies of the Kula culture. During his time on the islands, he found the traditions of their culture that distinguished them as human beings. Everything the Kula do is socially acceptable in their society. Malinowski uses his ethnography skills to prompt our society to understand another's' throughout his lengthy book.

(3) In some models including the HGS polyhedron models, two sp3 carbon atoms connected with two bent bonds are traditionally used as a C = C double bond, because it easily visualizes the double bond (two bonds). However, such simple visualization may be confusing to students, because this structure is scientifically incorrect. In the HGS model, two sp2 carbon atoms can be connected with one Alfa-bond, and Pi-bond can be made by using p-atomic orbital plates, showing the correct structure and bonding mechanism of a C = C double bond. After understanding the basic nature of double bond, p-atomic orbital plates become unnecessary for assembling larger molecules. If double and triple bonds of old type are desired, it is still possible to use the bent bonds

Good book

Exceedingly well-written.

The dust jacket of the hardcover book immediately causes you to wonder if this is perhaps a children's book instead of yet another gloriously well-written fantasy from Feist. It seems that the covers have gone from incredible (in the preceeding series) to "blah" in this one. However, as is said, one cannot judge a book by its cover (though sometimes it makes for pleasant viewing), so I ignored the rather bland artwork and dug right into the novel. Having read the previous two books, I was more-or-less expecting many of the sub-stories that made up the plot, but I was in no way prepared for the almost wholesale loss of most of my favorite characters from the previous series. However, I try to keep firmly in mind the adage that death doesn't matter as long as the character died for a reason and died well. And, my stars, Feist does write a fabulous death scene. So after shoving aside the poor artwork of the jacket and the loss of some favorite characters, I began to look at the story as a whole and how it related to the previous two books. For the most part, everything had a resolution of some sort. There were very few loose threads left undone, but since there is yet another book coming out, I'm sure those small points will be addressed. The first book in this series (Shadow Of A Dark Queen) focused intensely on Erik von Darkmoor and Rupert Avery and how they related to their group. There were a few side stories, but the reader's attention was primarily focused on those two. In the second book (Rise Of A Merchant Prince), the attention focused mostly on Rupery Avery and the side stories were a bit stronger so as to make up for the gaps. In this book, the focus is mainly Erik von Darkmoor with even stronger side-stories making for an entertaining novel. Though Erik is given considerably more attention, the other characters of this series command our full attention when they are thrust into the spotlight during their chapters. Still, with all of this wonderful writing and entertaining characterization, the book does have some weak points that need to be addressed. It seemed, at times, like Feist had planned this book out years and years ago and then lost the outline until recently. Hundreds of words are taken up by backpedaling. That is to say, Feist was constantly having a character point out plot and character flaws while having another character explain it away. Case-in-point: Macros The Black. In the fourth book of the earlier series (A Darkness At Sethanon), we are treated to a rather entertaining and complete story of the background of this previously mysterious character. Suddenly in this book, we find out that the entire story was one big lie. We find out that Macros is not immortal, not of another world, unable to see the future, etc. etc. ad infitum. It seemed as if Feist needed this character rather badly and then in the middle of writing this book, said "Oops" and had to explain away all of the inconsistancies. There are a number of other similar "Oops" incongruities that detract a bit from the enjoyment of the whole. If you have never read the other series, then you won't miss anything, but having read all of his books, I found myself at points saying "Wait, this doesn't make sense according to..." However, despite these tiny "boo-boo's," the book is very well done and a certain enjoyment to fans and even non-fans of Raymond Feist. I recommend it heartily.

Rage of a Demon King: A Satisfying Conclusion

Actually, I'd give this book a seven and a half.

First of all, while Rage of a Demon King ties up many of the loose ends which have accumulated through this three book series, it attempts to do too much. The Pug subplot got old very, very fast, and the stunning accumulation of new information the reader receives after Macros's awakening (i.e., Nalar the evil god, Ishap is dead, the Valheru and the other races are pawns) not only weaken the earlier series but they aren't needed. It's almost as though Feist feels the need to manufacture a gigantic overarching plot when one isn't needed. The emerald queen invading with her army is plot enough. By the way, is it just me, or do the Pantathians disappear way to quickly?
That being said, the novel does have its strong points. In some cases new information is appreciated. The Dread being defined as the denizens of the seventh circle of hell and the demon's as the fifth is appreciated. The battle between Maarg and Macros is fantastic, and Roo and Erik's evolution as characters is fascinating. Why Feist didn't concentrate more on them is incomprehensible. Rise of a Merchant Prince is the best book of the series, perhaps the best of the newer Midkemia books. Roo's inability to love and Erik's eventual confrontation with his Darkmoor history is far more interesting than Pug and Miranda's exploration through other dimensions.
The ending, which suddenly removes the Keshian threat, the demon horde, and redefines Nakor, Pug, Calis, and Tomas, leaves enough loose ends that we can expect a sequel rather quickly. General Fadawah is still wandering around, and Krondor still hasn't been rebuilt. Hopefully new characters as interesting as Roo, Erik, and Calis will arise. Feist certainly killed off enough of the old characters to make room.
The taking of Krondor and the death of William, Jimmy the Hand, and his wife Gamina, are gut wrenching and really give the reader the sense of closure towards the first books in the Midkemia world. One must wonder what the future holds, and yet it is easy to find satisfaction in the ending. Is Tomas now more human? Why was Calis the only one who could use the lifestone? Why was Pug allowed to choose his fate by Lims Kragma? I only hope these questions are answered on Midkemia, and not by dimension hopping. That is what Feist does best, even if he loves writing about overarching battles between gods and immortals. Still, this series has proven a good read, and one of the better over-all series in fantasy literature.

About the Author

Nick Royle is a senior lecturer in behavioural ecology at the University of Exeter with research interests centred on early life-history effects, sexual selection and parental care. He uses both vertebrate and invertebrate model systems in the field and in the lab for his research, and has published papers on parental care in a variety of journals, including Ecology Letters, Functional Ecology, Nature and Proceedings of the Royal Society B. He is a section editor for the journal BMC Ecology. After completing his PhD in zoology at the University of Durham he was a postdoctoral research associate at Lancaster University, working on within-family conflicts of interest over parental care in birds. Following this he did further postdoctoral research, this time on resource allocation and sexual selection in fish at the University of Glasgow, before taking up a NERC research fellowship on conflicts over parental care and moving to the University of Exeter's Tremough campus in Cornwall.

Per Smiseth is a lecturer in animal behaviour at The University of Edinburgh with research interests in the evolution and genetic basis of parental care and the resolution of within-family conflicts over parental care. He uses an experimental approach that focuses on the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides, but he has a broad taxonomic background that includes work on parental care in birds and mammals. He has published papers on parental care in journal such as PNAS, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, The American Naturalist, Ecology, and Evolution. After finishing his PhD in Ethology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, he moved to The University of Manchester as a postdoctoral research associate to develop N. vespilloides as an insect model for studying within-family conflicts. Since this postdoc, he continued his work on N. vespilloides as a NERC research fellow at The University of Manchester, until he took up a position as a lecturer at The University of Edinburgh.

Mathias Kolliker is an assistant professor in evolutionary biology at the University of Basel with research interests focusing on parent-offspring conflict and co-adaptation, and the genetic basis of social interactions. He uses mathematical modelling as well as experimental research in both the field and the lab, and has published papers on parental care and parent-offspring interactions in journals as, for example, The American Naturalist, Animal Behaviour, Behavioral Ecology, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B. After he finished his PhD in Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Bern he went as a postdoctoral research fellow to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he developed mathematical models of parent-offspring coadaptation and did experimental research on insect parental care and parent-offspring interactions. After this postdoc, he moved to the University of Basel to establish a research group working in these areas.

This technical book is a comprehensive update to the enormous amount of research that has accumulated lately by researchers of Animal Behaviour. It will be a great first reading on the main issues of this subject for anyone entering the field of Parental Care.
