CHAPTER ONE



it was one of the last days of the twentieth century.

The girl with the big smile was awakened by the sound of raindrops hitting the tent cover above her head. as long as she kept her eyes closed she could imagine that she was still back in the village by the cold, clear river that spilled down the side of the mountain. But as soon as she opened her eyes she was thrown out into an empty and unfathomable world, one in which nothing of her past remained except disjointed images of her escape. She lay still and slowly let herself float up into consciousness, trying not to leave her dreams without preparing herself. These first few minutes of the morning often determined the way her day would turn out. during the three months in the refugee camp she had developed a morning ritual that helped her avoid being overcome with sudden panic. The most important thing was not to rush up from her uncomfortable cot with the misguided notion that something momentous was about to occur. By now she knew that nothing ever happened here. This was the first lesson she learned after she had dragged herself onto the rocky european beach and been greeted by guard dogs and armed Spanish border guards.

Being a refugee meant being lonely. This was something that was true for them all, regardless of what country they had come from or what circumstances had forced them to flee. She didn’t expect her loneliness to leave her soon, in fact she had prepared herself to live with it for a long time.

As she lay with her eyes closed she searched for a foothold in the confusion of all that had happened since her arrival. She was being held in a refugee camp in southern Spain, lucky to be one of the few survivors from that mouldering ship from africa. She could still remember the air of expectation aboard. Freedom has a scent, she thought, which only grew more overpowering as land approached. Freedom, security, these were what they wanted. a life where fear, hunger, and hopelessness were not the only reality.

It had been a cargo-hold of hope, she thought; although it was perhaps more correct to call it a cargo-hold of illusions. everyone who had been waiting on the Moroccan beach that night and who had placed their lives in the hands of the ruthless human smugglers had been ferried over to the waiting ship. Sailors who were little more than shadows had forced them down into the cargo area, as if they were modern-day slaves.

But there had been no iron chains around their ankles. what had ensnared them were their dreams, their desperation, all the fear that had driven them to break up from various hells-on- earth in order to make their way to freedom. They had been so close to their goal when the ship hit a reef and the Greek sailors had left in lifeboats, leaving the people in the cargo hold to save themselves.

Europe let us down before we even arrived, she thought. i will never forget that, whatever happens to me in the future. She didn’t know how many people had drowned, nor would she ever find out. The cries for help still pulsated like a pain in her head. at first she had been surrounded by these cries, then one by one they had fallen silent. when she hit land she had praised her luck. She had survived; she had arrived. But for what? She had quickly tried to forget her dreams. Nothing had turned out as she had imagined.

A harsh spotlight had picked her out as she lay on the cold and wet Spanish beach. The dogs had run up to her and then the soldiers surrounded her with their shiny weapons. She had survived. But that was all. afterwards she had been placed in the refugee camp with its barracks and tents, leaky showers and dirty toilets. on the other side of the wire fence she could see the ocean that had released her, but nothing else, none of the future she had imagined.

The people in the refugee camp, so varied in their language, dress and terrible experiences – imparted through a look or sometimes words – had only this in common: nothing to look forward to. Some had been there for many years. No country was willing to admit them and all of their energies were devoted to avoiding being sent back. one day, as she had been waiting in line for her daily rations, she spoke with a young man from iran – or was it iraq? it was often hard to know where people came from since they invariably lied about it in the hope that it would make their applications for asylum more attractive. he said that the camp was simply a large death chamber, a holding place where the clock ticked on relentlessly towards death. She had immediately understood what he meant but tried to ignore the thought.

His eyes had been full of sorrow. They surprised her. Since she had grown to be a woman all she had seen in men’s eyes was a kind of hunger. But this thin man seemed not to have noticed her beauty nor her smile. This had frightened her. She could not stand the thought that men did not immediately desire her, nor that the long and desperate flight had been for nothing. She, like all the others who had been caught, lived in the hope that her ordeal would one day be over. Through some miracle someone would one day appear before her with a paper in his hand and a smile on his lips and say: welcome.

In order not to drive herself insane she had to be very patient. She understood that. and patience could only arise if she did not allow herself any expectations. Sometimes people in the camp committed suicide, or at least made serious attempts. They were the ones who were not strong enough to stifle their own expec- tations and the burden of thinking that their dreams would one day be realised finally overcame them.

Therefore, every morning when she woke up, she told herself that the best she could do was to rid herself of hope. That and never mentioning her true country of origin. The camp was always a hotbed of rumours about which countries offered the best chances for asylum applicants. it was as if the camp were a marketplace of countries where the possibilities for entry were recorded on a kind of stock market. No investments were ever long-lasting or secure.

A short while after she arrived, Bangladesh had been highest on the list. For some reason that they never understood, Germany was granting immediate asylum to all people who could prove that they came from Bangladesh. during an intense few days people of all complexions and appearances waited in line in front of the exhausted Spanish bureaucrats and argued with great fervour that they had suddenly realised they were from Bangladesh. in this way at least fourteen Chinese refugees from the hunan province made their way to Germany. a few days later Germany ‘closed’ Bangladesh, as they said in the camp. after three days of uncertainty a rumour was started that France was prepared to take a certain quota of Kurds.

She had been unsuccessful in her attempts to research where the Kurds actually came from or what they looked like. Nonetheless she stood in line with the others and when she at last stood in front of a red-eyed clerk with the name tag ‘Fernando’ she smiled her sweetest smile. Fernando simply shook his head.

‘Tell me what colour you are,’ he said.

She immediately sensed danger, but she had to say something. The Spanish didn’t like people who didn’t answer their questions. a lie was better than silence.

‘You are black,’ Fernando said in reply to his own question. ‘There are no black Kurds. Kurds look like me, not you.’

‘There are always exceptions. My father was not a Kurd, but my mother was.’

Fernando’s eyes seemed only to redden. She continued to smile. it was her strongest weapon, it always had been.

‘And what was your father doing in Kurdistan?’

‘Working.’

Fernando threw his pen down in triumph.

‘Ha! There is no Kurdistan. at least not in any official capacity. That is exactly the reason that Kurds are fleeing their country.’

'How can they leave a country that doesn’t exist?’

But Fernando lost patience with her. he waved her away.

‘i should report the fact that you have been lying,’ he said.

‘I’m not lying.’

She thought she could suddenly see a spark of interest in his eyes.

‘You are speaking the truth?’

‘Kurds don’t lie.’

The spark in Fernando’s eyes died away.

‘Go,’ he said. ‘it is the best thing you can do. what is your name?’

She decided in that moment to give herself an entirely new name. She looked quickly around the room and her gaze fell on the teacup on Fernando’s table.

‘Tea-Bag,’ she replied.

‘Tea-Bag?’

‘Tea-Bag.’

‘is that a Kurdish name?’

‘My mother liked english names.’

‘Is Tea-Bag even a name?’

‘it must be since that is what she called me.’

Fernando sighed and dismissed her with a tired wave. She left the room and did not let the smile leave her face until she was out in the yard and had found a place by the fence where she could be alone.

Disappointing

Mankell is a good detective fiction writer, but this novel wanders and is frankly very boring. And I don't like the main character at all, whereas I love Kurt Wallender. I think I understand why he wanted to write this novel, to reveal the stories of some of these immigrant women and to show what's happening in Sweden that is tearing at the fabric of a once homogenous community, but because the main character is not particularly sympathetic, and because of the untidy, unfocused structure of the book, it just doesn't work. I was very disappointed.

Social Criticism Wrapped in Absurdist Literature

It's an odd book. The purpose of this didactic work is to tell the story of illegal immigrants and thereby increase public awareness of their plight and perhaps of the restrictive immigration policies of European countries, Sweden in particular. I wonder why it took eleven years to be translated into English and published in the United States. We certainly have our own problems with the treatment of illegal immigrants. It's a well-crafted novel. Humlin, the central character, and those around him are made to appear ridiculous, totally preoccupied with their own petty problems and unaware of the plight of immigrants, whose goal is "to become visible" (p. 145), although to a certain extent, they are protected by their invisibility. The first portion of the novel deals with Humlin's own efforts - and the efforts of those around him - to gain greater visibility within the society of which they are a part. The vehicle suggested to gain visibility is to write a crime novel. Humlin's publisher suggests that he do so, although he refuses even as the company starts a publicity campaign about a novel which doesn't exist; his mother claims she is writing one; his rival claims to be writing one; his girlfriend claims to be writing a tell-all novel about their life together. Humlin is afraid that any of them might be more skilled than he, thus taking the spotlight, no matter how small, away from him and subjecting him to invisibility. It's absurdist literature at its best and funniest. The main theme is "there are few things that make any sense in this life"(p. 165), and Humlin's world becomes ever more absurd after his encounter with a world of which he was unaware - an underworld of people who "don't exist." The people in Humlin's normal world, of course, take their own existence for granted, in the same way that the illegal immigrants depend on their non-existence for survival. Both, however, seek to "become visible."

When Humlin becomes involved with some immigrant girls (one legal, two illegal) and their extended families, his perspective begins to change. "He then thought that Sweden had turned into a country he really knew very little about" (p. 175); indeed a friend tells him "'Life isn't what you think it is, Humlin . . . [you think] this is essentially a peaceful and harmonious country'" (p. 233). Writing a crime novel is the route to greater visibility (financial reward) envisioned by Humlin's associates. The girls want to learn to write so they can tell their stories, and Humlin coaxes each of them, partially through a "writing seminar" he conducts, to tell her story. The stories, the heart of the novel, however, are composites, many stories crammed into the tales of these girls. The reader senses that even with the stories told, all will return to the status quo. The girls disappear, leaving Humlin with only an idea to tell their stories, but it is one in which no one is interested and one in which he will soon lose interest because it is not a visible part of the world he inhabits. The immigrants are invisible to others.

Although absurdist literature, the plight of the girls is painful to the reader. Mankell's novel is an effective medium because it tries to compress many stories into one, demonstrating to the reader that "there are few things that make any sense in this life" (p. 115) and that the ultimate absurdity of the world of invisibility required of the immigrants is that " . . . it is harder to get rid of a person without papers than if one still had a name, an identity." To exist, one must not exist. Humlin never understands that they cannot exist publicly because that would call attention to them. This is Mankell's protest: they cannot become visible without risking deportation. Perhaps we can understand their plight by understanding our own efforts to become visible.

Intriguing and unusually humorous

I have read all of Mankell, and this book is a delightful change. Half the plot is deadly serious, about human trafficking and illegal immigration of refugees....and the other is about the poet whose agent insists he write a crime novel (seemingly like every other Swedish writer), whose mother is impossibly manipulative, and whose girlfriend is learning from his mother. Relax and enjoy the surprise. Not nearly as dark as you're used to.

'That was some game you played over the weekend, Sam. I certainly never expected to see the Corporation's gold trophy go to a woman…'

'Sam isn't a woman, women are small and cute and cuddly, they stay at home and make babies…. Sam…even her name isn't womanly…'

Samantha Miller drew herself up to her full height—an inch over six feet—which was an impressive four inches above the man who had just so publicly and cruelly criticised her.

'You know your trouble don't you, Cliff,' she drawled affably. 'You just don't know a real woman when you see one. Seems to me that a man isn't so very much of a man if the only kind of woman he can handle is the kind you've just described, and as for making babies.' She paused for emphasis, well aware of the fact that she had the attention of their fellow employees who had happened to be in the large airy open-plan office with them. 'I'm woman enough to have a baby any time I want one.'

Only now was she revealing the true extent of her anger at the way Cliff had insulted her; her eyes flashing challenging sparks, her voice trembling a little with the force of her feelings.

'You have a baby…' her antagonist jeered angrily before she could continue. 'Who the hell would want to impregnate a woman like you? No way. Your only chance of having a child would be via some med student's sperm and a syringe..

Enough of the people standing around broke into laughter for Samantha to recognise that no matter how publicly she might be accepted by her colleagues, an uncomfortable proportion of them seemed to share Cliff Marlin's views.

Faced with the same situation another woman might have burst into tears or lost her temper but not Sam. You learned young when you were as tall as she was that crying didn't look cute, and besides.

Looking down from the advantage of her extra inches Samantha bared her teeth in a totally false smile and gave a dismissive shrug.

'You're entitled to your opinion, Cliff, but gee, it's a shame that you're such a sore loser. Mind, if I played golf as badly as you do, I guess I might be a tad sore about it, too. And as for making babies…how many times did you miss that putt on the eighth.'

Now it was Samantha's gibe that earned a responsive titter of amusement from around her.

Without giving Cliff the opportunity to retaliate she turned on her heel and walked quickly away, her head held high.

What did it matter that she knew the moment she was out of sight and earshot that the others would be talking about her, gossiping about her, the six foot Amazon of a woman who, in all the time she had been with the Corporation, had never attended any of its social events with an escort; the only one of her admittedly relatively small group of female peers in what was essentially a very male-biased industry who had not, at one point or another, confided the details of her private life to the others.

Now, at just over thirty, Samantha was well aware that she had entered a decade which might prove to be one of the most productive and fast-paced of her whole life. It was also a decade which would see the chance of her meeting a man, the man…the man she would be able to fall in love with, the man she would want to spend the rest of her life with, the man with whom she would have the babies she craved so much, sharply declining.

There would be men of course…were men…masses of them, men who didn't want to commit, men who didn't want children, men who did want children, but who most definitely did not want a wife, men who were already married…men who… Oh, yes, the list of men to avoid was endless and the choice narrowed even further when one was as picky as she.

'Why don't you at least have a date with him?' her twin sister Roberta had demanded the last time she had been over visiting her family in the States from her new-found home in England. Their mother had been complaining to Bobbie about Sam's obduracy in not accepting a date from the man who had been pursuing her at the time.

'There isn't any point. I already know he isn't the one,' Samantha had told her fatalistically. 'It's all very well for you to take Mom's side,' she had complained to her twin later when they were on their own. 'You've found your man, your perfect "one and only," and when I've seen how special what you and Luke have together is, how happy you are, how could I possibly settle for anything less.'

'Oh, Sam.' Bobbie had hugged her contritely. 'I'm sorry, you're right, you mustn't but I have to say I hope you find him soon. Oh dear,' she had then apologised as she'd started to yawn, 'I do feel tired.'

'Tired, I'm not surprised,' Samantha had laughed, and then unable to stop herself she glanced with rueful envy at her twin's heavily pregnant body—not with twins as Bobbie had first hoped, though. This was another single pregnancy. Seeing the look in her eyes Bobbie had asked her gently, 'Have you never met anyone you could love, Sam? Has there never been anyone you have loved?'

Samantha had thought for a moment before shaking her head. Her blonde hair, unlike her twin's, was cropped into a mass of short tender curls that framed her perfectly shaped face making her large blue eyes seem even larger and darker than Bobbie's.

'No. Not unless you count that crush I had on Liam way back when he first started working for Dad… I must have been all of fourteen at the time and Liam pretty soon made it clear that he wasn't interested in a juvenile brat with braces on her teeth and her hair in plaits.'

Roberta had laughed. Liam Connolly was their father's most senior assistant and it was no secret in the family that Stephen Miller was encouraging him to run for the position of State Governor when he himself retired.

'Yeah, well, I guess to a man of twenty-one, especially one as good-looking as Liam, the idea of having a fourteen-year-old adoringly worshipping him doesn't hold that much appeal.'

'Believe me, so far as Liam was concerned it didn't have any appeal,' Sam had returned feelingly. 'Do you know he even refused to kiss me one particular Thanksgiving. Can you believe that—and me his boss's daughter…'

'Yeah, that could have been a real bad career move,' Bobbie had agreed tongue-in-cheek, 'and an even worse one if Dad had found out Liam was encouraging you.'

'Mmm…and Liam has always put his career ahead of everything else.'

Bobbie had raised her eyebrows a little at the critical note in her twin's voice, inviting an explanation of Sam's acidic one.

'Oh, come on, Bo Bo, there's been a succession of women in his life—and his bed—but even Dad's commented on the fact he's never come anywhere near making a serious commitment to anyone. Lordy, he hasn't even allowed any of them to move into his house.'

'Perhaps he's still looking for Ms. Right…'

Samantha had given her sister an old-fashioned look.

'If he is, then all I can say is that he surely is having one hell of a good time with an awful lot of Ms. Wrongs first!'

Now, all too well aware of what was likely to be being said about her behind her back in the general office, Samantha headed for the elevators. So what if officially she wasn't due to take her lunch break for another full half an hour? Right now she needed to breathe fresh clean air and not the stale rancid stuff she had just been forced to endure, contaminated as it had been by Cliff's malice and envy. Because that was what had sparked his attack on her, Samantha knew that… He had been riding her hard for the last six weeks—ever since she had been offered the promotion he himself had wanted.

She had a month's leave coming up soon, thank goodness, and she had already made arrangements to spend most of it in England with her twin.

Her father's term as State Governor had only a little more time to run, otherwise he and her mother would have been joining her.

Theirs was a very close family, made all the more so because of its history. Her mother had been born illegitimately to Ruth Crighton, the unmarried daughter of the Crighton family of Haslewich in Cheshire, England, at the time when unmarried girls of Ruth's class simply did not become pregnant or certainly were not supposed to.

It had been during the Second World War. Ruth had fallen deeply in love with Samantha's grandfather but, due to a misunderstanding and the disapproval of her own father, who had a bias against Americans, Ruth had erroneously believed that Grant had lied to her about being single and actually already had a wife and a child in the States. Pressured by her family, Ruth had given her baby, Samantha and Roberta's mother, up for adoption.

By one of those quirks of fate that always seemed too farfetched to be possible, Ruth's baby had been adopted in secret by Grant, who had assumed that Ruth was rejecting her child in the same way she had rejected him.

It had only been when, on realising how badly their mother Sarah Jane was still affected by the dreadful hurt caused to her by her mother's rejection, that Samantha and Roberta had hatched a plan to bring Ruth to book for her desertion of her child. It was then that the whole real circumstances surrounding the birth had come to light.

Not only had their grandparents been reunited, but Roberta had also met Luke to whom she was now married and already had one child. Another was on the way.

Like their grandmother, Luke, too, was a Crighton. Only from the Chester, not the Haslewich branch of the family.

Great Book!

I am an avid reader of romance novels and Penny Jordan is one of my favorite authors. I had many expectations from these two stories and they match up to all my expectations. They were great stories and once I started them I couldn't put it down. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good book to pass a day with.

Very short 20 pages

** spoiler alert ** This story was too short, it was such a tease. I hope Sherrilyn Kenyon comes out with Nick's story soon.

In this short story, Nick returns back to his home after his ordeal with Stryker and Satara. He is now a Dameon Dark Hunter only with special powers stronger than the regular Dark Hunters. He can walk about in the day light like Acheron.

Nick's hatred towards Acheron is still strong but his reasonings and understandings about the situtations around him are starting to become clearer as he learns of the acts that Acheron has done.

However, even though his feelings are changing, Satara is constantly putting and feeding hatred into Nick. Nick realizes this so he keeps himself from letting Satara and Stryker know how he feels especially when he finds out who Acherons mother is and learns that it is Acheron's mother Apollomy who rules the dameons and that Stryker is her son too.

Now Satara has promised Nick that they can bring his mother back if he gets Kyrans daughter to them. Satara calls in a Dream Hunter to give Nick a teaser of his mother.

The story leaves off at a point that keeps us wondering if Nick will get Kyrans daughter and turn her over to the Dameons.

Poor Nick

Oh Nick, how you break my heart!

This story follows Nick on his return home after Katrina and after the most horrible death ever. The whole Nick/Ash storyline gives me an ulcer. I miss the way everyone used to be! This story was filled with the feels, and was wonderfully gritty and real. I guess it goes without saying, but you shouldn’t read this story unless you are caught up to this point.

Nick is just so… filled with angst and darkness. His homecoming was certainly jarring and emotional, even for the reader.

This is half about Nick and his constant (to the point of unnatural) mommy issues and half a shill for another book.

Remember, Nick slept with Simi...Ash had never told Nick, his supposed buddy, who (what) Simi was to him...there was no supernatural reason why Nick - known male tramp - WOULDN'T sleep with her...Ash got unnaturally upset about it all and said things that ended up causing - in his mind - Nick's overly beloved mommy to die. Nick then chose to off himself because he was an emo-snotty brat then accepted deals he had no business accepting. This too-short-to-mean-much bit tells of Emo Nick being Emo.

Critics charged that Green Party voters inadvertently contributed to the election of a conservative Republican president because they chose to "vote their conscience" rather than "choose between two evils." There is no constitutional warrant for two parties, and winner-take-all elections need not set third parties up to fail. She argues that the two-party system as we know it dates only to the twentieth century and that it thwarts democracy by wasting the votes and silencing the voices of dissenters.

The Tyranny of the Two-Party System reexamines a once popular nineteenth-century strategy called fusion, in which a dominant-party candidate ran on the ballots of both the established party and a third party. Unable to predict either the rise of smack-down artist Jesse Ventura to the Minnesota governorship or the outcome of the 2000 presidential election, some political scientists are retreating to scholasticism. Red flags need to be raised since it is nearly always predictable that when the electoral world disappoints, political scientists will turn to utopian critiques of America's constitutional system or its two-party system-bedrocks of democracy. Despite the catchy title, this book fits into this mode. Disch (political science, Univ. of Minnesota) is the author of Hannah Arendt and the Limits of Philosophy. Her new book grows out of dissatisfaction with modern electoral politics. Disch participated in the disappointing efforts of the Twin Cities Area New Party (TCANP), an offshoot of a leftist alternative to the Democratic Party. She concludes that the two-party system shortchanges the promise of American democracy. A broader historical perspective may have proven useful, however. Many readers may find this critique too utopian and abstract; its title promises an overview of what is wrong with America's two-party system, but it is instead a case study of presidential politics in St. Paul, MN. Disch's book is strong and unique as it strays from many of the traps that plague third-party literature. Her book does not focus solely on a single party in an attempt to generalize from a unique example, nor does it fall prey to the "easy answer" syndrome: telling the reader why a third party erupted and why it could no longer retain its electoral viability. Disch presents a refreshingly unconventional take on American party history that is unique within this genre of party literature.

It has long been conventional wisdom in American political discourse that the United States is a 'two-party system'and is constrained by the 'logic'of this system. In this book Lisa Disch does a wonderful job of showing that the two-party system is a contingent historical outcome and that the idea of the system is questionable, designed to give this outcome more solidity and staying power than it deserves. This is a fine book that should interest political theorists, political scientists, and ordinary citizens concerned about the future of American democracy.

Scholarly, engaging and provocative

Students of American government (especially undergraduates) usually encounter the two-party system as a given: inevitable, immutable, American-as-apple-pie. This book does an outstanding job of showing how the system we currently have is the product of a series of political choices and circumstances, even beyond the impact of single-member districts and winner-take-all elections most commonly recognized in political science. The book uses the case of electoral fusion as a central focus, but the value of the book is broader than that. It shows, in very scholarly fashion, how the rules, ideology and political culture of our current system was created, and thus destroys the illusion that what we have now is inevitable and eternal. While the book isn't exactly "light" reading (Disch's training as a political theorist is obvious, and it serves the book well), it is very well-written. It will be most accessible to those readers with a bit of political science background.

Powerful, accessible, provocative--an absolute MUST read

I'm not certain how else to say it except directly: it seems clear that Professor Pederson, author of the editorial review, simply failed to read Disch's book. The book was conceived well before Ventura's victory and written before the election of 2000, and its greatest strength is that it takes PRECISELY the historical view that Prof. Pederson calls for. This is NOT a case study of the TCANP, but an erudite, sophisticated and always approachable study of the practice, theory, and HISTORY of the American party "system." Disch takes her analsysis back to 19th century electoral poltics to show how the practice of fusion thrived and how fusion was outlawed through political maneuvering--not by some sort of historical inevitability. Her critique of the two-party system rests on her analysis of a lengthy history of party scholarship, not a "utopian" leanings or general "dissatisfaction." Pederson's review fails to even describe fusion--the common practice in the late nineteenth century of multiple parties nominating the same candidate--even though fusion is central to Disch's argument. He also fails to mention that Disch's critique of the two-party system centers on her brilliant ability to demonstrate how arbitrary and historically produced--how very much not a "system"--is the current configuration of party politics. Instead, Pederson tells us that the two-party system is a "bedrock" of American democracy. Well, almost every page in Disch's book patiently demonstrates for its readers the falsity of that claim. This book should quite simply be required reading for students of American politics and political theory. It makes a perfect complement to an intro course in either field, while at more advanced levels it contributes to advanced party scholarship and the debates over social constructivism. Moreover, the book should be highly recommended reading not just for folks outside of those fields, but for American citizens generally.
