A Brilliant Book!

For the fans of fiction: a must read! Fast-paced and accurate, I never put the book down once. The plot is well-planned and detailed, as well as exiting and interesting. Curiosity to find out what happens next in this book is absolutely over-whelming! The beginning, when I started, was not the greatest of beginnings (I have to say) but after you get to know the situation and the characters, I sort of grew to love them. THe unexpected lurks in every sentence in this book! I repeat: For anyone who considers themselves a reader, they HAVE to read THE COMING OF DRAGONS. It's not a book that pops up everyday!

...that's what we're all look for, right? Pros: Nice "gifts" for Edmund and Elspeth. If you are into the Eragon series, Edmund's gift (although not nearly as powerful as a dragon rider) is similar in that he can sense things and see what others are seeing. Interesting characters...still waiting to find out more about Clurian. Cons: imagery is fair to good. I had trouble "seeing" the landscape at times or the people in it. Edmund and Elspeth ALWAYS choose the "wrongly". Heros (and heroines) are supposed to get into tight spots--I get it--but not always because they make sophomoric choices.

Overall a good read. Ordered 2nd and 3rd if that tells you anything.

How Do You Save the World from a Virus?

Each book in this series has focused on a different member of the NERDS team, and this time around the focus is on Flinch. His special harness converts his junk food fueled hyperactivity into super speed and strength, but his jitters don't allow his brain to think and plan, so he is surprised when he starts being put in charge of missions.

And there are a lot of them because it seems like every day some new super villain is cropping up with a new plan to take over the world. But when a member of NERDS does the same thing, they begin to realize that there is a virus on the loose.

Meanwhile, the team has started a new school year at Thomas Knowlton Middle School, and their new principal, Ms. Dove, is watching them like a hawk. Can they still get away to save the day without getting into trouble? And will the entire world succumb to the villain virus before a cure is found?

As with the other books in the series, this one features lots of action and some good suspense wrapped in some great laughs. I was always easily pulled into the book and the pages flew by. The action was almost non-stop, and a couple of the scenes actually did have me laughing out loud. I did find a plot hole (error? glitch?) in the climax, but it is a minor issue.

While all the members of NERDS are in every book, the central character is the one who gets the most development, and watching Flinch grow was really rewarding. He'd been the hardest of the kids to figure out before, so I enjoyed getting to know him better here.

Fans of the series will certainly enjoy catching the latest adventures of the team. I would recommend starting the series at the beginning since certainly earlier books are spoiled by what happens here.

Funny but educational .....

Flinch was great in book 4 and a valuable lesson was learned about perseverance and self confidence. We read the series as a family at night and we are eagerly awaiting book 5. Can't wait to see what becomes of both Heathcliff and Ms. Holiday.

My students love this series! This is a funny new addition to the series. I hope there are many more to come, because I can't keep these books on the shelf... My 5th graders love them!

A glimpse at Deaver

'It was clear that the classic textbook procedure for running a case forensically wasn't going to work.'

Lincoln Rhyme is renowned for his forensic knowledge but even he is tested when a recent murder is buried, literally, in evidence. The perpetrator has attempted to cover any evidence they personally left in the smartest way possible; by flooding the scene full of incidental evidence. Extremely smart, except he detailed that exact scenario in his highly prominent forensic textbook. The more digging his team does in uncovering the relevant pieces of evidence, the greater Rhyme's suspicion that someone may be using his textbook against him to get away with murder.

I've read eight of Jeffery Deaver's 'Lincoln Rhyme' novels but this is my first short story of his. His books always contain a mystery so skilfully constructed it's almost as if you're watching a puzzle slowly disassemble itself as you turn each page. All of his novels are quite large and the disassembling takes time so I was interested in seeing how well he's able to build a mystery with so few pages. Admittedly it doesn't have the same flair that his full-length novels have but it was still an enjoyable and quick read. Any of the Lincoln Rhyme novels work fairly well as a stand-alone, but if you're a newbie to Deaver's works I'd recommend A Textbook Case to give you a glimpse at what he's capable of.

Lincoln Rhyme is fine in short story format.

Since Jeffery Deaver readers already know most of the relationships in this long-running series, the short story comes off very well. Same fixation on evidence versus motive. Same disciplined Rhyme.

I actually enjoyed it more than a full length novel, as I got into and out of it in a night, and was quite pleased with resolution. A great read for those familiar with the series. For newbies, I suggest reading a few full-length Lincoln Rhyme mysteries before reading this short story. You will appreciate it that much more.

Short Story of Interest

This is the first Jeffery Deaver book I have read. If you like mystery stories this is a good book to read, but I only gave it three stars because I felt it was too short and if develped more, it could make a great book. If you love quick reads, this will appeal to you.
