Great cozy!

It’s New Year’s Eve and Nell Fitzgerald has huge plans. She’s on her way to New York City to spend the holiday in the Big Apple with the love of her life, Jesse Dewalt. They have a difficult time getting the time off as Nell leaves her quilting shop, Someday Quilts, in the hands of her grandmother and Jesse leaves his police station in the capable hands of his deputy, Greg.

Just before Nell and Jesse are ready to leave, the local pizzeria owner, Joe, gets into some trouble and is locked up in jail. Jesse has no problem leaving Greg in charge, but as soon as they arrive in New York, they get a call that Joe is dead. Now, Greg is being accused of his death. Nell and Jesse have no choice but to put the holiday on hold and return home.

No way does Jesse believe Greg is responsible for this. With the help of Nell and the ladies of the Someday Quilts group, Jesse is determined to prove his deputy’s innocence.

The characters feel more like family. The story moves at a fast-pace. The story unfolded in a logical, methodical way. Readers can easily follow along.

This is the second novella in this series I’ve read and I am so hooked just from the novellas. There are five full length novels in this series and it’s another series on my “TBR” series list. I don’t know how I missed this cozy mystery series when it first came out but, from two novellas, I can tell that I would love it.

A good little mystery novella

"Streak of Lightning" by Clare O' Donohue is a novella available in e-book format designed to tide all of the "Someday Quilts" series fans over until the next novel is released this fall. Even though it helps to be familiar with the characters, it also works as a stand alone mystery novel. I enjoyed the book and had so much fun reconnecting with the characters, I read the whole thing in one afternoon. Here is a short synopsis from the publisher:
"Back in Archer's Rest, Nell Fitzgerald and boyfriend police chief Jesse DeWalt are heading out of town for a romantic New Years Eve weekend in New York City. Hoping for a clean break from work, Jesse leaves his police partner Greg in charge of the precinct. The first order of business is dealing with Joe Proctor, an abrasive bully who everyone in town seems to hate. Joe's latest altercation--this time with local florist Violet--ends with a chair flying through her flower shop window and him in handcuffs.
As Nell and Jesse arrive in Grand Central station, their getaway is suddenly curtailed by a call with disturbing news. Joe was found dead in his cell at the police station, leaving Greg as the only viable suspect. As the state police step in to investigate this possible homicide, Nell and Jesse work below the radar to learn more about Joe and find the killer. Did a long standing grudge between Greg's father and Joe make this the perfect opportunity for payback? Why did Violet and Joe argue, and did she secretly get even for damage to her shop? Or, did someone else want to settle their own score with the unpopular Joe?"

I would recommend this book to mystery novel fans looking for an entertaining and light summer read. If you haven't read any of O'Donohues books, this also would serve as a perfect introduction to her writing style and to the Archer's Rest cast of characters. I have enjoyed all of the books in the "Someday Quilts" series and this one did not disappoint. Look for her next book, "The Double Wedding Ring", to be released in October.

One of Kazantzakis most passionate books

I am pleased to find that a number of reviewers find this book life-changing. It presents the entire anguish of human being, and it is the book that describes one of the highest concerns of Kazantzakis, an issue that he deals on several other books, but never with such fever: the desire of the human being to talk with God, and the depths that the human mind has to go in believing and disbelieving, in facing irrationality and hearing the voice of God.

You do not have to be religious in the strict christian sense. If that is the case, then this book might be offending, as it presents the passions of man that tries to reach God in an 'uncoventional' way, that does not abide by the doctrine of the church.

Still, I was deeply affected and deeply shaken by this book, more than any other book of Kazantazakis that I have read. Reading it was a 'passion' in itself. I had to reach the same depths, and I felt some of the anguish of St. Francis, as presented by Kazantakis. A lst remark. Do not compare the book with a biography. St. Francis is a tragic hero, an embodiment of mans religious passions, an example of faith.

Makes St. Francis into a Raving Lunatic

Ugh, I really wanted to like this book. The author makes Saint Francis out to be a raving lunatic and some of the chapters go on and on. I am trying to finish up the last 20 pages of the book, and based on what was written, Francis should have been dead 50 pages ago. I understand that this is an acclaimed book, but if you are accustomed to biographical type writing (very analytical, etc.) this won't work well for you. The prose is flowery and I am not sure it lends well to credibility.
