Despair should never be allowed to rule Thanksgiving Day.

Haley Jennings eyed the two camouflage-clad little boys in her backseat, mentally searching for anything she might have ever learned about children in her twenty-eight years on the planet.

She came up empty. That didn't sound promising for the orphaned nephews now in her care.

Tear tracks snaked a path down three-year-old Todd's round cheeks, a worn, black stuffed kitty named Panther clutched tight against his chest. Five-year-old Tyler slumped against the corner of the car, burrowing, as if hoping to disappear into the upholstery. He shed no tears, but the quiet look of abandonment seemed worse for lack of emotion.

Scared. Uncertain. Handed off as though they were parcel post packages from one place to another. And no doubt hungry, but few restaurants were open this late on Thanksgiving Day, a should-be-glorious holiday of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing.

The thought of homemade stuffing made her mouth water. How much more must two little fellows be longing for a good old-fashioned holiday?

Part of her was glad their maternal great-aunt had found Anthony's will that named her the boys' guardian. Another part longed to run screaming.

She took the turn toward Jamison, knowing she had no food in her recently acquired no-frills apartment and the grocery store had closed mid-afternoon. And with the boys' meager belongings piled and shoved into every corner of her convertible, she had no room for a shopping trip and precious few funds to bankroll extra groceries this week.

Whoever said God's timing was perfect should be chastised, because this situation was about as far from perfect as life could get.

A flashing sign caught her attention as she approached the Park Round, the picturesque town circle surrounded by five country churches and a couple of pastors' homes.

Free Thanksgiving Dinner! Join us from 2:00 till 5:00 on Thanksgiving Day for a friend-filled holiday feast! All are welcome!

An arrow pointed toward the back of Good Shepherd Church. An upgraded older building stood there, caught in the trees, an aged steeple rising white against the late-November drab of damp bark. A chill wind bowed the sticklike trees, but the white-washed hall was surrounded by cars and bathed in light from garden stake lamps below.

Dinner.

Free.

One glance at her dashboard clock said they were nearing the late side of the offer. She faltered, not wanting to subject the boys to any more disappointments on a day that should be filled with family. Fun. Food. Rejoicing.

The word feast turned her hands on the wheel. Or maybe it was the Holy Spirit. In any case, she angled the car up the drive and into a parking spot. She climbed out and tilted the driver's seat forward, banging her head and knee in the process.

Red ragtops weren't designed as family vehicles.

"Where are we going?" Tyler eyed her from his booster seat, glancing around to discern an easy way out of the car. There wasn't one.

"Climb out this way." Haley jerked her head toward her side as she struggled with the puzzlelike latches on Todd's car seat. Who knew you needed a math degree to figure out a five-point latch system? "Once I've got your brother out, that is."

As she pulled Todd from the backseat, she managed to bump his head, too. Not too badly, but enough to start the waterworks flowing, full steam ahead. "Oh, baby, I'm sorry." She crooned the words and rubbed the spot, wishing she'd thought to cushion his head with her hand while extracting him.

Next time, for sure.

"I hate this car." Tyler made the pronouncement as he finagled his way across small bags and totes shoved into the backseat.

"I'm not all that fond of it myself at this moment," Haley assured him. "But it's paid for and it runs and at one time it was a status symbol. Cute blonde chick in blazing hot red convertible with mag wheels."

"It's dumb." Tyler brushed off his five-year-old knees with an air of impatience. "And we don't fit."

There lay the crux of the problem. Todd and Tyler hadn't "fit" in a long time. These two little boys had lost their mother and father in the past two years and they'd been shuffled around to various homes for months—way too much change for a level-headed grown-up.

Two boys, aged three and five?

Ridiculous.

But possibly made more outlandish by her half brother's will naming her their legal guardian. Anthony scarcely knew her. She barely knew him. They shared a father and a legal relationship recognized by courts. Other than that? They'd met half a dozen times over the years, mostly at weddings and funerals.

What was he thinking?

The door to the hall swung open and a couple of old-timers stepped out. "Ma'am, may I hold the door for you?" An old man dipped his head in courtly fashion, a shock of white hair dancing in the wind. "That wind's a breath-stealer, sure enough."

She hesitated, not wanting to ask if there was still food, not daring to get the boys' hopes up only to dash them again. "I, urn…"

"Plenty of good eats in there, miss, and I think those two boys are just the thing for them folks inside. Nothin' like bein' 'round a couple o' young-uns to remind us why we keep on keepin' on."

His words eased her path. Did he see the hunger? Or the fear? Or both?

In any case, Haley grasped a boy's hand in each of hers and walked the last twenty paces. "Thank you, sir."

"Jed, have a mind, will you, and close that door," bossed a woman's voice from within. "My tablecloths are being tugged every which way!"

The old guy exchanged a grin with Haley, winked at the boys and hollered back, "Customers, mother! We've got two young soldiers in need of a bite."

Haley stepped inside, Todd on her right, Tyler on her left. Silence descended as she and the boys moved from the front room into the gathering area, as if few in the room imagined little boys coming to Thanksgiving dinner at the church hall.

A tall man stepped forward. Fortyish. Good-looking. Square-shouldered. Broad-built. Dark hazel eyes matched military-cut hair, walnut-toned with hints of light. His assessing gaze went liquid brown while he pondered the boys at her side, as if recognizing something perfect and precious. He blinked and the look was gone, but the integral air of quiet authority and respect remained. Haley had the oddest urge to salute the big guy. Or maybe just hug him. Right about now, she could use a hug.

A pleased murmur stirred an air of delight through the room. "Look at them!"

"Aren't they marvelous?"

"Oh, they are!"

"Who are they?"

"Oh, it doesn't matter. It's just so nice to see such handsome little boys at our feast!"

A tiny smile quirked the man's left cheek, just enough to show amusement tempered with respect, bookend qualities that few men in Haley's age range possessed.

This man had both and more, his take-charge attitude calming the confusion within her without speaking a word. He squatted to the boys' level, but didn't invade their space. His sensitivity loosened their grip on Haley's hands, her arms, as if willing to meet the big guy halfway. A neat trick, all told.

"You hungry, boys?"

"Yes." Todd nodded, emphatic.

"Starving." Tyler sent a bullish look Haley's way. "She drove all day and didn't want to stop anyplace."

"Ah." The man appeared to weigh Tyler's words. "Traveling on a holiday can be tough. Stores close early. Some restaurants don't open at all."

"Really?" Tyler poked his head closer to the man, then hooked a thumb back to Haley. "That's what she said, but I figured she was making it up."

The man's gaze traveled up, and not all that quickly, as if appreciating the journey. Deep hazel eyes locked and held her attention long enough to make her heart trip faster. "Does she have a name?"

"Aunt Haley." Tyler said the words with more than a little distrust.

"She's pwetty." Todd leaned closer to the man, too, following his brother's lead. "And I like her yellow hair."

"It's drop-dead gorgeous," the man agreed easily. He spiked that crooked smile up to Haley and had no idea what his gentle manner was doing to her. He winked at her, stood, reached for the boys' hands, and to Haley's surprise, they moved forward. "You guys ready to have Thanksgiving dinner with us?"

"Yes!"

"I am." Tyler nodded, firm, obviously trying to contain his excitement. His reaction told Haley he was accustomed to disappointment. Her heart broke because she knew that feeling all too well.

"Haley? Haley, is that you?"

The little woman who helped run the mom-and-pop convenience store at the interstate junction bustled out from the kitchen and hurried their way. She flapped her apron and grinned, her high-wattage smile enough to make everything seem almost all right. "LuAnn."

"And Charlie's here, too," the older woman fussed, her silver hair dancing sparks from the fluorescent lights above. "He's going to be so excited to see you, dear, but who are your friends?" LuAnn Simmons bent low and stuck out a hand, but Haley noticed she handled the boys with deference, like the man had done, hanging back, not encroaching their space.

"My nephews," Haley explained.

The man palmed Tyler's head in a sweet gesture, but he moved back as LuAnn stormed in. He didn't smile but his eyes grazed Haley, LuAnn and the boys. He dipped his chin slightly, noting the white-haired woman. "You're in good hands. No one goes hungry with Charlie and LuAnn around."

Haley knew that. She was a constant customer at their little store, its proximity to her new business venture ...

Enjoy a 5-Star `Joy of Christmas' Story with the Most Heartwarming Characters You'll Meet this Season!
By Vince
Author's Unique Treatment of Conflict Makes "His Mistletoe Family" a Nail Biting Joy to Read!

"His Mistletoe Family"

Ruth LoganHerne
Love Inspired
Print or Kindle

Romance fans and other writers will love it! This is the kind of story that was made for Christmas. The major characters in the book are the most sympathetic and deserving of happiness as any you're likely to find outside of the Christmas Carol.

A good indication of why, "HisMistletoe Family," has such endearing characters can be found in the author's "Dear Reader" letter at the very back of the book. I think it helps if the reader reads this message first:

"Dear Reader:

On Memorial Day in 2010 I stood alongside a tall, strong forty-something soldier. I didn't know him. He didn't know me. He watched that small home-town parade with grave intent. On the back side of his military cap were tiny yellow ribbons, marking two memories in a quiet, private way.

"I knew I had to write a story about him. Whoever he was. That stoic soldier became the basis for Colonel Brett Stanton, retired, U.S. Army. And those two ribbons became symbols for Ben and Josiah. Most of us are honored when others emulate us, but when that example leads loved ones to an early grave, the resulting guilt weighs heavy, especially at holiday time."

With this kind of genesis one can understand how the feelings in this book are so genuine and heartfelt. The characters are rich enough for the author to employ a unique approach to the novel's conflict. Normally in a romance the conflict stands between the hero and heroine. The reader wonders how these two could ever overcome the obstacles that are keeping them apart. Often even more obstacles are thrown into the mix as the story progresses. This makes the resolution of the conflict itself the central focus of the story. This is not the case in "His Mistletoe Family".

The Hero

The hero, Colonel Brett Stanton, has become almost a recluse since he retired from the Army. Few people even see him in town. His son and younger brother both entered the Army to emulate his example. They died because of it. He may have a case of survivor's guilt. He was not a good father. He was always gone. He's a good and noble man. He served his country well and he paid a very high price for his service. When the heroine comes to town with two young nephews she just inherited, he immediately comes to her rescue time and time. He would like nothing better than to have a second chance to be the husband and father he should have been the first time around.

The Heroine

The heroine, Haley Jennings, is almost thirty. She's single and has had a horrible childhood with a father who abandoned the family to start another family. She is also over-worked trying to start a new business. Against her selfish mother's advice, Haley accepts the guardianship of her half-brother's two sons who are three and five years old. She has no idea how to be a mother or what a happy family would look like. When the hero offers to help her in many ways she reluctantly agrees because she needs that help.

Apparent Conflicts

The apparent conflict here is that the hero may be seen as too old for the heroine and the heroine may seem to have too much baggage with two children she must raise. But this isn't a real conflict because the heroine would love to have a strong, older, father figure as a husband and father for her nephews. The hero views the two children as God's way of giving him a second chance to be a good father.

Soulmates? Perhaps.

The hero and heroine start the story as ideal solutions to each other's problems. Brett is the key to Haley's lock. They are a perfect match. While they just met as the story opens, there is no doubt that given a decent interval of time they will fall in love and marry. But there is always doubt in life.

Wait Until Next Year!
It's like being a Yankee fan and the Yanks are in the seventh game of the World Series and they score eight runs in the first inning. This is not a tie game that could go either way. No, this game is now a Yankee `win'. It's their game to lose -- if they blow it. If you love the Yankees, this kind of game can be the most nerve wracking kind. As a fan you know that every hit by the other side could spell disaster...could mean the floodgates are about to open. The Yankees could lose the game and the World Series. As a fan watching such a game you are afraid of losing what you already consider yours: a victory. This can cause more stress than watching a tie game which neither side ever considered won.

The Importance of Sympathetic Characters

To successfully employ this unique type of conflict the author must create absolutely sympathetic characters the reader will love and root for. Since the central focus is not on overcoming existing conflicts, the author has the time to create the most genuine and endearing characters. This is what Ruth Logan Herne managers.

When It's Not A Close Game

Consider why this is so important. If you loved the Yankees in the above example, the game would be a real nail biter. You'd worry about every hit and wish the game would end soon before things could go wrong. But what if you did not favor either team? Let's say you liked another team not in the World Series. You might very well find a lopsided game not worth watching while a tie game going into the last inning could hold your attention. This is the same with the novel. If you didn't really care a lot about the characters you would miss the traditional conflict which captures the typical romance fan's interest.

A Greater Risk. A Greater Reward.

What I am saying is that the author has taken a huge risk using this type of conflict. It worked! It's great. It's highly emotional. It's exceptionally satisfying. The last time I felt this good after reading a Christmas story was when I first read the "Christmas Carol".

"A Mistletoe Family" Is The One Christmas Romance You Don't Want to Miss Reading this Season.

Family is Where the Heart is
By P. Romance
Haley Jennings had just found out she was granted guardianship of her 2 nephews and she was out of her depth. Luckily, her new town was there to help her. Especially, Brett Stanton.

A simple and sweet romance. I greatly enjoyed the wonderful cast of characters. But the main attraction was definitely the hero. Colonel Brett Stanton epitomized what a true hero really can be. He had many hardships in his life but he didn't let it get in the way when it came to the heroine. He cared more for her welfare than his need to suffer in solitude. That only made you love him more. Haley Jennings can be off-putting at times but I totally get her. But you know what, for every 1 step back, she managed to take 2 steps forward. Her struggle in becoming an instant single parent was very relateable. Her nephews played a major role in the story and helping develop the couple's relationship. So, if you don't like children in your romances, you have been warned. The plot was not riveting per se. But there was always something going on that encouraged the reader to press on. And it definitely helped that the chapters were not too long or short. The writing was well done. Not too wordy. There wasn't much romantic courtship. It was more of being a shoulder to cry on and being there when you are needed.

All in all, a sweet story that might not be a cup of tea for everyone. The lack of drama and romance can be off-putting for some readers. If you like a simple Christian, Christmas story of finding the meaning of family, this is perfect for you. Others? I suggest passing this one by. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because even though I liked it, I wouldn't pick this book up again.

Holiday Happily Ever After
By Kathleen L. Maher
I really enjoyed this sweet story about a retired Army Colonel and a young entrepreneur in Upstate NY who find romance and comfort in one another's arms. Haley Jennings loves a challenge in business--she has started a co-op in her grandfather's old factory right during the Christmas rush, which would be a daunting task for the most focused among us. But then, a monkey wrench is thrown into her life--her brother has left his two young sons into her care.

With a five and a three year old in the back seat of her convertible, Haley must find time, food, and resources on a cold Thanksgiving night when her search lands her at a church meal, locking eyes with a handsome and mysterious man--Brett Stanton. Brett hides his pain by hiding from the world. He has lost family in the war and has shut himself off from relationships--until something about the beautiful lady and her two young wards tug at his heartstrings.

As a resident of upstate NY who has traversed these same small towns--Bolivar, Jamison, Wellsville, Olean. . . I found this book to be a delightful trip through my memories of beautiful countryside and warm-hearted people. This writer captures small town hospitality and the rugged, pull-together aspect of these communities. Her characters are believable and sympathetic, and their stories resonate in the heart.

Even though Christmas is past, the snow is still white on the ground, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this holiday happily ever after.

"Can there really be this many kinds of mac 'n cheese?" Lt. Sam Holland asked U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano.

Sam's normally unflappable husband looked somewhat flapped as he contemplated the wide array of choices. "How do we know which one to get?"

There were spirals and shapes and something called "Easy," but Sam was certain it would be easy for everyone but her. "Maybe we should wait until Scotty gets here and let him pick out his favorite kind."

"I want him to have what he likes in the house. How hard can it be?"

Sam scanned the shelves once again and decided it could be quite hard. "You don't suppose there's this many choices for chicken nuggets too, do you?"

The question seemed to suck the life out of Nick. Sam pushed the grocery cart aside and reached for him.

Surprised by her rare public display of affection, Nick returned the embrace. "How am I going to convince him to come live with us permanently if I can't even handle mac 'n cheese for a three-week visit?"

"He's not going to care about the food, Nick. He cares about being with you."

"And you."

Sam took in the busy grocery store, overwhelmed by the task. Hunting down murderers was simple compared to this. "What're we even doing here?"

Chuckling, Nick kissed her cheek and stepped back from her. "We're doing what regular people do when they have a guest coming to stay with them."

"So we're regular people now, huh?"

"For a few more minutes anyway." Nick took the box that proclaimed to be easy off the shelf and put it in the carriage. "Let's hope for the best."

"If he doesn't like it, I'll tell him it was your call."

"That's good of you, babe," he said as he steered the cart toward the chicken nugget aisle. "So I've been thinking."

Sam was busy enjoying the view of his denim-clad ass as she followed him through the store. He had rich brown hair that curled at the ends, hazel eyes and a mouth that was made for sin. And he regularly made sinfully good use of it. "About?"

"We need some help."

"With what?"

"Let me rephrase—we need someone to run our lives, especially with Scotty coming to stay with us. What if we get caught at work or something comes up that we can't get out of?"

Sam thought about that. "He could go to my dad's."

"True, but your dad and Celia have lives too. If Scotty lives with us, he's our responsibility."

"What do you think we need?"

"Someone to keep tabs on him when we're not home. To drive him to practice if we can't do it. To make sure the house isn't a wreck, the dry cleaning gets picked up, the bills get paid, there's dinner at night and some sort of schedule."

Sam rolled her shoulders, already chafing at the thought of paying someone to boss her around. "I don't know about this…"

"Someone to buy the mac 'n cheese and chicken nuggets," he added with the charming smile that made her knees go weak. "You'd never have to step foot in a grocery store again."

"That's playing dirty, Senator."

"We need someone like Shelby." The tiny dynamo had put together their fairytale wedding in six short weeks. "Someone who can hold her own with you," he added, ducking as she took a playful swing at him. "Why does it have to be a her? I'm picturing a studly dude named Sven with muscles on top of his muscles."

Over his shoulder, Nick rolled his eyes at her. "It doesn't have to be a her. It has to be someone who can put up with you."

Even though he was absolutely right about that, she'd never tell him so. "You're skating on thin ice, my friend." She followed him up one freezer aisle and down another until he stopped the cart in front of a mind-boggling selection of chicken nuggets. "I wonder if Shelby would be up for a career change."

Laughing, Nick put his arm around Sam. "We could certainly ask her."

"She won't want to do it. She has a booming business."

"You never know. It's certainly worth asking. Maybe she knows someone who'd be interested."

"We're really doing this?"

"Let's ask around and see what transpires."

"You're sure this she of yours will know what chicken to buy?"

Nick opened the freezer door and withdrew a bag of breast tenders, studied them and put them back. "She can't screw it up any worse than we are."

"That's for sure." Sam's cell phone rang. "Saved by the bell."

He frowned at her. Their rare day off together had taken a tremendous amount of schedule juggling to pull off, and she hoped this call wouldn't ruin their plans. They'd even declined the standing invite to Sunday dinner at the Leesburg, Virginia, home of his adopted parents, retired Senator Graham O'Connor and his wife, Laine.

Sam flipped open the phone. "Holland."

While Sam took the call, Nick studied the chicken tender options. He'd been nervous about Scotty's pending arrival for days now. The three-week visit was actually a trial run for all of them. The boy Nick had met at a campaign stop at a Virginia home for children in Richmond had become their close friend. When Nick asked him to come live with them permanently, Scotty's hesitation had surprised him. With hindsight, Nick could understand the twelve-year-old boy's reluctance to leave the place that had become home to him.

He'd been elated when Scotty mentioned a baseball camp in the District and suggested he might stay with them while he attended. Nick wanted everything to be perfect for all of them, thus the knot of fear he'd been carrying around. Nothing about their life was ever perfect. Most of the time it was a bloody circus—literally—with Sam hunting down murderers while he campaigned for reelection.

They were lucky to get ten uninterrupted minutes together on a regular day. What business did they have bringing a child into that madness? But what choice did they have? He'd become essential to them, and now Nick could only hope they'd become essential to him too.

"What's the matter?" Sam asked.

Nick dragged his eyes from the chicken nuggets and turned to her. "Was that work?"

She shook her head. "Tracy had another huge fight with Brooke." Sam's sister had been locked in World War III with her teenage daughter for months now. "It keeps getting worse."

"That's tough."

"Trace is a mess." She reached up to caress his face. "What has you looking so troubled?"

"I was thinking about Scotty."

"What about him?"

"What if this visit is a disaster? What if we blow our only chance with him?"

Sam stepped closer, placed her hands on his shoulders and looked up at him with potent blue eyes. "It won't be a disaster. It'll be reality. He needs to see what our life is really like—the good, the bad, the ugly. There's no sense sugar-coating it. If he comes to live with us, he needs to know what he'd be getting. He needs to know who he'd be getting."

Amused and touched by her efforts to bolster his spirits, he said, "And who would he be getting?"

"Two people who'd love him and care for him and support him—always."

"You're right. Of course you're right."

"I usually am," she said with a cocky grin that made him laugh.

"I refuse to dignify that with a response for fear of hearing about it for the rest of my life." Reaching into the freezer, he grabbed a bag of breast tenders and tossed it into the carriage. "Let's hope we got something he'll eat. If all else fails, there's always his favorite—spaghetti."

"Even we can't screw that up."

"Don't jinx us."

She took his hand and linked their fingers. "It'll be great. I promise."

Since his gorgeous wife was, in fact, often right, Nick chose to believe her. For the first time in days, the knot in his stomach loosened a bit. Maybe, just maybe, it would all be fine.

After they stashed the groceries at home, Nick went looking for Sam and found her in the study in front of the computer. "Um, excuse me. Day off. Remember?"

"I need to check in, and then I'm all yours."

He wrapped his arms around her from behind and stopped short when he saw that she'd rearranged his desk—again. "Really, Samantha? Every time?"

The kisses he placed in the most ticklish areas on her neck made her laugh even harder.

He reached around her and pushed the power button on the monitor. "You're done." With more kisses to sweeten her up, he said, "What do you think about a trip to Georgetown? I bet our workaholic buddy Shelby is at her shop today. We can stop in and say hello. If she isn't there, we can grab some lunch and do some window shopping."

She curled an arm around his neck and brought him down for a real kiss. "Am I only allowed to window shop?"

"Whatever you want, my love."

"Ohhh, I like the sound of that."

"Then let's go."

They grabbed a cab to the swanky neighborhood where Shelby kept a storefront bridal boutique. "Damn it," Sam said when she saw the closed sign outside the main door. "It was too much to hope that she'd be open today."

"Look." Nick pointed to a pink Mini Cooper parked across the street. "Who else could that belong to?"

"True."

"Call her. Maybe she'll see us."

Sam pulled out her phone and placed the call.

"Did you already blow it with the sexy senator?" Shelby asked when she answered.

"Ha-ha, no, I didn't already blow it with him," Sam said with a smile for Nick. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, though. We're outside your store. Got time for a quick visit?"

"For you? Always!"

Sam slapped the phone closed. "She's coming."

A minute later, Shelby appeared at the door to let them in. The tiny blonde, dressed in a pink silk jogging suit, greeted them with hugs and squeals of delight, though her face was puffy and red. "You guys look fabulous! Married life is clearly agreeing with you. Are you here about the replacement dress? Vera promised it by the end of the month. I still can't believe someone actually slashed a Vera Wang original!"

"What's wrong, Shelby?" Sam asked. "Have you been crying?"

"Oh no, no. Allergies." She led them back to her office. "They're a bitch this time of year."

Behind Shelby's back, Sam grimaced at Nick, letting him know she didn't believe Shelby's explanation.

When they were seated in pink leather easy chairs and holding glasses of pink lemonade, Shelby clapped her hands and let out another giddy squeal. "It's so good to see you! I'm thrilled you came by. The dress should be in any time. Unfortunately, we caught Vera in the height of the spring wedding season."

"Actually, we're not here about the dress, even though we appreciate your help in replacing it," Nick said, glancing at Sam. "We have a bit of an ulterior motive."

"What's that?" Shelby asked.

"We're hoping you might know someone who'd be interested in a job."

"What kind of job?"

"Basically, we need someone to run our lives." He explained about Scotty coming to stay with them, how they were hoping to adopt him and how they needed someone to see to the day-to-day details. "Do you know anyone who might fit the bill?"

By the time he finished speaking, Shelby had tears running down her face.

Alarmed, Sam looked at him and then at her. "Shelby, what is it?"

"I'm so sorry." Shelby tried frantically to deal with the tears. "I'm a mess lately. It's the hormones. They're making me into a wreck. And the business. I'm trying to figure out what to do, and then here you come and you're looking for—"

"We're looking for you," Sam said, "or someone exactly like you who is ruthlessly organized."

"And can handle her," Nick said, pointing a thumb at Sam.

As Sam scowled at her husband, Shelby laughed through her tears. "I should explain. I've been trying to have a baby. I know it might seem crazy, but I'm forty-two, and I'm tired of waiting for Mr. Right to show up. I really want a baby, you know?"

Nick reached for Sam's hand and squeezed. "Yes, we know." Thinking of the baby they'd lost in February was like reopening a still-raw wound.

"I see happy couples through the most wonderful day of their lives, wishing all the time that one of those happy days might be mine. Before you dropped by, I was sitting here by myself, mired in paperwork, weeping all over the place as I wondered how much longer I can do this. I was going to have to either give up on the baby dream or give up the business, because I can't continue to work with happy people while I'm crying my eyes out all the time."

Sam sat up a little straighter. "Does that mean you might—"

"It would be an honor and a privilege to work with you both—and to help take care of your Scotty, who is absolutely adorable."

"Really?" Nick said. "What about your business?"

Shelby shrugged as if it were no big deal to step away from a successful business. "I have people who could run it for me. I'd keep half an eye on it from a distance."

"Are you sure about this?" Sam asked.

"Your visit here today was the sign I've been waiting for. I need a change, and working with you again would be wonderful. As long as you won't be put out by some occasional tears."

"Not at all," Nick said.

Sam nodded in agreement. "How soon could you start?"

"How about a week from Monday?"

"Wow, that'd be great," Nick said. "That's the day after Scotty gets here."

"I'll have to deal with the weekend weddings I've already committed to for a few months. I hope that's okay."

"Of course," Sam said, still not fully sold on this plan of Nick's, which had fallen into place rather easily. She also wasn't sure how she felt about being around another fertility-challenged woman when she'd had her own difficulties in that area. "One thing I should mention is the uniform."

Nick looked at Sam. "What uniform? We never talked about that."

Forcing a blank look, Sam said, "Absolutely no pink allowed. I'm afraid this is a deal breaker for me."

Nick and Shelby laughed, as Sam expected them to. "I can't believe this has happened," Shelby said with another squeal. "It's like an answer to a prayer."

"For us too," Nick said as Sam's phone rang. "Crap," she said with a regretful look for him. "It's Dispatch."

"There goes our day off," Nick said to Shelby. While Sam was occupied, he talked salary with Shelby.

In a state of shock, Sam listened to the rote recitation of details from Dispatch.

Nick glanced up at her. "What is it, babe?"

Her voice was little more than a whisper when she said, "Victoria Kavanaugh has been murdered."

No "deception" - just a perfect five-star read!
By Anne W
There's no need for me to revisit the product description. It's well-presented above.

Once again Marie Force has given readers a well-crafted romantic suspense in the latest addition to her top-notch "Fatal" series. A perfect combination of love, passion and suspense!

The devotion between Sam and Nick continues to grow stronger and the romance only gets more creative and steamier. It's downright swoon-worthy. The chemistry and banter that goes on between Sam and Nick is nothing less than genius. MF continues to develop the depth in her main characters, as well as in the secondary cast with new and fresh detailing. The family dynamics adds yet another level of reading enjoyment to this series. With each book readers are assured a well paced criminal plot with twists and turns that will keep you glued to your chair. Between the sizzling romance and the chilling suspense, I'm always a well-satisfied reader. "Fatal Deception" is exceptionally well-written with creativity, witty dialogue, and sizzling sensuality and once again delivers a complete package.

Marie Force is a natural at her craft. Time after time, this author creates magic that brings her stories and characters alive on the pages of her books. As a reader, that's the key to a great read for me. And it always keeps me coming back again and again to read every book this author releases.

I highly recommend this series. Try one book and you'll be craving more!

What's not to love about Nick and Sam...
By Doreen
Wow talk about another awesome book added to a totally wonderfully writen series. I first feel in love with the writing style of Marie Force when I downloaded at the time a free copy of her stand alone book Love At First Flight for my Kindle and have been hooked ever since.

If you've been following the romantic suspense couple of Nick and Sam this is a must read book. You learn alot more about the couple and their friends and loved ones in FD. You find out more about what happened years ago to destroy Skip (Sam's father) marriage and why he didn't want Sam looking into an old case. There's a wonderfully writen dialouge between Christin and Nick about love, marriage and babies. The connection between Sam, Nick and Scotty grows even stronger as does the romance between Nick and Sam. And you get a brand new murder and a whole new political scandel for our new couple plus a whole lot more.

A Bridge Over a Giant Shark Tank
By Sabrina Dent
I have read through all five Fatal books, and the novella. These are not the kind of book you read for massive depth, but rather for escapism; Nick and Sam do require a certain suspension of disbelief. I'm willing to gloss over what must be America's most indolent state senator and some pretty whack police procedure. I'm willing to believe that neither one of them has had such an exhausting day that they've ever skipped a single night of sex. And I'm even willing to believe that they're both having flawlessly consistent orgasms every single time. I mean, it could happen!

Where this series really jumped the shark for me was with the arrival of Scotty the Wonder Orphan. There is no child that flawless, and no child who has been in state care who comes through the system that unscathed - even a child living in the impossible magical group home described in this book. Speaking of impossible, there is also no state-licensed care facility that is going to allow a child to cross state lines and stay overnight with the Pope, let alone any other adult. Any couple looking to house a child for three weeks would require intrusive home vetting and background checks from a social worker, and in Virginia, time consumptive state-mandated training. Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but some basic research into child placement would have gone a long way here. Finally, that his gratitude is what endears Scotty to Sam and Nick is the worst of adoption tropes, and the characterisation of this relationship in Deception is a bridge too far for me. I suspect I am done with this series.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone: The Playboy Interview (Singles Classic) (50 Years of the Playboy Interview), by Playboy

In mid-1962, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner was given a partial transcript of an interview with Miles Davis. It covered jazz, of course, but it also included Davis’s ruminations on race, politics and culture. Fascinated, Hef sent the writer—future Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Alex Haley, an unknown at the time—back to glean even more opinion and insight from Davis. The resulting exchange, published in the September 1962 issue, became the first official Playboy Interview and kicked off a remarkable run of public inquisition that continues today—and that has featured just about every cultural titan of the last half century.
To celebrate the Interview’s 50th anniversary, the editors of Playboy have culled 50 of its most (in)famous Interviews and will publish them over the course of 50 weekdays (from September 4, 2012 to November 12, 2012) via Amazon’s Kindle Direct platform. Here is the interview with the South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone from the June 2000 issue.

Matt & Trey Skewer Hollywood - The Birth of South Park
By Dirk Drudgler
This interview was conducted in 2000. The movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was just released and was a success. Parker & Stone had made a few other movies and had a few seasons of South Park under their belt, but seemed to be fatalistic about their future in Hollywood, so it was definitely an interesting time to interview them.

By now, in 2013, Stone & Parker have been interviewed so often and discussed their work in so many places that the information here is really nothing new. Unlike many of the other classic Playboy interviews from this series which occurred from the 1950's to the 1990's, Stone & Parker have been thoroughly vetted by the internet and there is not much we don't already know about their careers and the genesis of South Park. One interesting little tidbit was at the time of the interview they did not visualize South Park lasting more than a few more seasons, they imagined a body of about 70 episodes. Considering that South Park is nearing season 20, I found this to be an amusing thing.

One of the greatest things about Parker & Stone, based on more recent interviews and work, is the fact they are among the rare few who have stayed true to their own vision and have not compromised to success after all these years. They hated celebrity pretentiousness then as they hate it now and the rest of us are more than happy to let them continue to poke away at it for our amusement.

Great Insights
By B. Brown
A bit dated since they would go on to make way more shows than they said they would here, but still a great read. These guys talk so little about what they do that stuff like this ends up giving truer insight into what makes them great. From their passion to humility to thoughts on creativity, this was a solid article for any fans of them as a creative duo.

Will I never learn?
By Daisy Mae/Jan Smith
Should have known better at my age. It's written by a bunch of blokes who make Parker and Stone sound like a pair of loud and foul-mouthed brats. Well, Parker & Stone would have to be a bit that way, or South Park would never have happened. But it's like the the underpants gnomes' business plan - Step Two remains a mystery, ie how they came up with a work of genius and got rich, remains a mystery.
This is the sort of story best left to a woman.
