Muhammad Ali: The Playboy Interviews (50 Years of the Playboy Interview), by Playboy

In mid-1962, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner was given a partial transcript of an interview with Miles Davis. It covered jazz, of course, but it also included Davis’s ruminations on race, politics and culture. Fascinated, Hef sent the writer—future Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Alex Haley, an unknown at the time—back to glean even more opinion and insight from Davis. The resulting exchange, published in the September 1962 issue, became the first official Playboy Interview and kicked off a remarkable run of public inquisition that continues today—and that has featured just about every cultural titan of the last half century.
To celebrate the Interview’s 50th anniversary, the editors of Playboy have culled 50 of its most (in)famous Interviews and will publish them over the course of 50 weekdays (from September 4, 2012 to November 12, 2012) via Amazon’s Kindle Direct platform. Here are the interviews with the boxing great Muhammad Ali from the Ocober 1964 and November 1975 issues.

It's poetic and riveting
By Gisela Hausmann
The back cover of this book shows a beautiful portrait of Muhammad Ali with one of his quotes "Look - it ain't never been another fighter like me. Ain't never been no NOTHING like me"

This very well chosen quote says it all - and, no, there will never be anybody like Muhammad Ali. Then, it did not matter, and even today, it does not matter who you are and where you live, everybody knows Muhammad Ali. Even my mother, who is in her seventies, who lives in Europe and who has never been into sports, knew who he was and will stop doing what she is doing to read news about Muhammad Ali. That's because Muhammad Ali "shook the world".

However, the memory of Ali's outspoken comment begins to fade, today's youth`s memories start with the Muhammad Ali's famous lighting the Olympic Torch in Atlanta 1996. The more amazing it feels to (re-) read these two great interviews with Ali, "feel again" how he helped to shape an era.

It is interesting to read his thoughts about Archie Moore in the 1964 interview,
"... It's a shame he wasn't fighting big time when he was in his prime..."
Little did Ali know that we would not see him fighting is his prime.

Ali's thoughts about Islam are interesting and should be re-read today.

Thank God, a lot has changed since he said, " ... We thought black was bad luck..." and
"... No, and when I will leave boxing, there will never be that kind of money for fighters again. I can get $5,000,000 or $7,500,000 for a fight because I got a world audience."

And, then came the Internet and a world audience for everybody, who can draw attention to his/her agenda but Muhammad Ali's words still stand today as they did then,

"The legend of Muhammad Ali is already written, `cause I wrote it - as a poem."

Thank you to Playboy Magazine for republishing this Ali's words. They will live on forever.

Two Interesting, Comprehensive Interviews - From the Mouth of The Greatest
By Dirk Drudgler
Playboy interviews were always an integral part of the dynamic of the magazine and were unique in form and style. The interviewers and their subjects could spent weeks, even months, together in the preparation of an interview. Playboy interviewers always remained essentially "out of sight," asking very short, pointed questions and allowing their subjects to freely express their own ideas. This style of journalism is especially important for this subject, perhaps the greatest athlete of the 20th Century, Muhammad Ali. Much has been written about Ali by others, but this is Ali talking about himself.

The fantastic thing about this collection is it is actually two interviews. The first, when Ali was still Cassius Clay, was conducted in 1963 right after he won his first world boxing title against Sonny Liston. This is a few years after Clay won the Gold Medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics and his confidence and swagger are unbelievable, even for him. I found this to be the most interesting interview because Clay goes into extensive detail about the strategy both in the ring and out. He was a master of getting inside his opponent's head long before stepping into the ring. Liston was a monster who very few gave Clay any chance against. For weeks he baited Liston and used the press and the general public to get Liston to fight the kind of fight Clay wanted him to fight. Everybody performed exactly as he expected them to perform. Boxing fans will love this interview because Clay goes round by round and explains each movement and each punch and how they contributed to his eventual victory. It is an outstanding document of what goes on between the two men inside the ring.

In between interviews Cassius Clay renounces his name and adopts the name Muhammad Ali to conform to his new Muslim beliefs. His refusal to submit to the military draft results in his title being stripped and a forced exile from boxing of three or four years before he is allowed back into the championship ring. Upon his return he proceeds to rebuild his brand and become a worldwide phenomenon.

The second interview takes place after Ali reclaimed his world title from George Foreman in Zaire in the mid 70's. Ali had lost the title several times (one time having it stripped from him, the other in the ring), but his desire to reclaim it from Foreman was insatiable. By this time Ali was an established worldwide superstar and he acted like it. I didn't find this interview as interesting from a boxing perspective although he does spend some time talking about how he beat Foreman, another hard hitting monster who hated to lose. Most of the interview is dedicated to Ali going extensively into what it meant to be a Black Muslim in America. Some of it is pretty radical and shocking if you only know Ali as the guy who clowned around with Howard Cosell. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this interview is how Ali is able to, within the space of a sentence, go from a radical reformer to a preening superstar. Unlike today's preening superstars, Ali is very intentional about it and knows exactly what he is doing. For him it works, making his legend that much greater.

In the first interview, Ali is lean, hungry, sharp and very dangerous. In the second he is concerned about slowing down and staying in shape to fight for a few more years. Muhammad Ali was one of the most confident and colorful athletes of any sport. These interviews are important historical documents which provide a very revealing look inside the mind of this amazing fighter.

Still the Greatest!!!
By G. Ryan Cleary
It's such a shame to see Ali as he is today. That's why these Playboy interviews are such a treasure trove. They remind you of the time when the Louisville Lip was not just the greatest, but also the greatest quote in professional sports. My only complaint is that there really wasn't enough content to make this into a book.

The Ali fans will enjoy it, but the purchase isn't great value. Would've been better if they had done follow up interviews with the people who interviewed Ali, to hear their observations about the one and only 3 time heavyweight champion of the world...

Rumble, young man! Rumble!
